I want to buy a cheap HI-FI stereo vcr for the television in the spare room so the kids have some place to watch their videos when company comes over. The TV is mono without stereo. Can you still hook up a stereo vcr to a mono tv and get a good mono sound?

yes

Some tv's have a floating ground it would be safe to go to Radio Shack or a TV repair shop tell them you need a small audio transformer this will isolate the TV & Stereo to keep from blowing any parts.hook one side to the speaker then hook 4 wires 2 to each lead then purchase some RCA male plugs for the aux hookup on the stereo.

(sigh) There i go again trying to complicate things- just hook up the vcr cord to the tv then purchase a pair of stereo jacks hook em up to the audio out on the vcr the other to aux on the stereo, this will give you true stereo sound and enable you to go surround sound if you wish!......... RADAR

Nah..

Just pick a channel from the vcr, left or right...(white, or red) and hook it up to the audio input to the tv... the kids will never notice any difference at all. No problem to either the vcr, or the tv. Better yet, just hook up a coaxial cable (regular cable hook up) from the RF out of the vr, to the RF in of the tv, and the composite signal will include audio....no prob.
