USP ratings

For those of you who have made their own homebrew and know a bunch about powders. I did a search on Google for USP ratings, USP24, USP25 etc. and can't seem to get any info regaurding this question.

I would like to know how to rate powders. I have seen USP24, USP25 Etc. I have no idea what this means except it has to do with the purity of the powder.

you cant neccesarily rate one batch of powder better than another based simply on the number associated with it's USP reference.

For example, USP27 is not necessarily more pure than USP 24. All it states is that the substance in question met the standards set by the USP27 guidlines.

Let's say USP24 guidelines state a certain substance must be at least 90% pure in order to be certified as USP grade. USP27 states that the same substance must be at least 93% pure to be certified.

You can see that the USP24 graded substance could potentially be 98% pure, while the USP27 graded batch might only be 95% pure.

The only really definitive way to know which is more pure is to have the powders tested yourself.

does this make sense?

This does make sense, but is there a standard for USP? For instance is there a guidline chart for USP##'s? Or does this vary from product to product?

Seems like no one else knows a damn thing about the USP ratings, so why would you buy powder if you don't know how pure it is? I am sure a melting point test would eliminate this question.

You DO know roughly how pure your powder is. My powder source has either USP ratings or actual percentages on the powders, like 97% minimum, or 98.5% pure at minimum. I've seen plenty of batches in my time, and most will be quality, if they weren't the powder companies would not sell product for long. Sometimes you'll get different colours in a different batch, but overall it's not worth it to sell an impure product. You'll be able to tell when half the product doesn't dissolve b/c it's junk filler and not hormone.

USP IS the standard.

The number changes because the set criteria to meet the standard changes.

As to what those criteria are for each individual USP rating, I have no clue

Thanks guys.

TUX- some of the powders do carry a % with them but others just plainly state the name of the hormone with no USP rating or %. PM me your e-mail and I will talk with you in more detail.
