Was Japan even a threat at that point in time? They were already essentially defeated. Many US generals, admirals and commanders at the time felt it was completely unnecessary from a military standpoint including Eisenhower, MacArthur, William Leahy, Ernest King and Chester Nimitz.
Russia had just declared war on Japan the day before Hiroshima, the US couldn't wait to see what affect the entry into the conflict the world's largest standing army would have?
Japan had also made several overtures to peace at that point. They were refused by the US as they insisted on unconditional surrender.
Napalm bombings over Tokyo were far more brutal and destructive than both A-bombs but couldn't end the war. Oh and asking for unconditionnal surrender was absolutely normal considering the mess japan started.
