Using the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki...good idea?

I said I wasn't going to argue that :)

Was Japan even a threat at that point in time? They were already essentially defeated. Many US generals, admirals and commanders at the time felt it was completely unnecessary from a military standpoint including Eisenhower, MacArthur, William Leahy, Ernest King and Chester Nimitz.

Russia had just declared war on Japan the day before Hiroshima, the US couldn't wait to see what affect the entry into the conflict the world's largest standing army would have?

Japan had also made several overtures to peace at that point. They were refused by the US as they insisted on unconditional surrender.

Napalm bombings over Tokyo were far more brutal and destructive than both A-bombs but couldn't end the war. Oh and asking for unconditionnal surrender was absolutely normal considering the mess japan started.

Don't disagree but that isn't convincing as an argument the bombs (and especially the second one) were justified.

It's your typicak light skinned vs. yellow skinned thing, I mean, did they drop a bomb on Germany?

The war ended earlier plus it was a over since january 1945 since german forces had no supply and would mass surrender. Japan was a different deal. Most of them would fight to death (germans weren't crazy enough).

Let's just say that it was done and the war is over. For better or worse :)

Yup. I think it's for the better if the horror of the incident serves as a deterrent. I thought that was the case but some of the replies in this thread give me pause.
