is it from some person? or a dealership? if you buy a lemon from a person off the street it's much harder to do anything about it.

I'd find out the blue book value for that car or check the classifieds for 96 jettas. compare the price.

waaaaaaaasupp nature boy....I am buying the car from my old roomate. The blue book on the car is like 5300 if you add the rear spoiler and alloy rims .

The engine runs quiet never heard him complain of anything wrong with the car except minor vw problems side molding & power windows.

I have researched and it is hit or miss with 1996 jettas some have transmission problems.

sir! transy problems r from people not using pepsi! just take the pepsi and pour it in the gas tank and ur jetta will purrrr like shrelby's pussy after being fucked by a 2 liter. pepsi sir! thank u!

Most banks use NADA values, not blue book. Make sure you don't try and finance 100% if it is selling at or above NADA. If you ever want to sell it or refi it, you are SOL. That is not a lot of miles for a car these days. Has he ever changed the timing belt, or clutch (manual tranny)? You will need those things done in a higher mileage vehicle. I would stear clear of American cars, they have shit for resale value. You most certainly would be upside down on your financing if you are not careful buying american.

clutch and timing belt not replaced yet i will get those checked out by mechanic.

Yeah I am buying the car cash. I don't even think banks finance cars over 5-6 years old.

the bank i worked at would go back to 1992. Not sure how you can even check a timing belt or clutch. The timing belt is not readily available, nor is the clutch. I know most cars you should have the timing belt done around 100k. Clutch...i had around 200k on the clutch in my truck before i got a new one, but you never know.

are you gonna pay it all up front? you can get some pretty sweet interest rates from some car dealers if your credit is good.

what happens if you buy it off your friend and a month later the engine dies or someshit? is it your fault or his?

I wouldn't go with the older Jettas. I worked at a huge dealership and those cars had more than a few problems. If you want reliablility, go Japanese. Honda or Acura are not bad looking cars, and they run forever.

One of the girls that works for my wife has a Jetta (about the same year) and is having all kinds of mechanical problems with it right now. I don't think they were ingine probs, but drive line issues from wear.

:lmao:

MOST banks will loan on a 7 year look-back.

Look at Hondas, toyotas, benz, bmers, acuras they might cost a touch more now but they are well worth the money.

GO to Kelly Blue book to get an idea of average retail for them

Isn't a Jetta a "gay" car?

Yes, along with the Mazda Miata, but I have a feeling it's not an issue with him. I would go for a Honda Accord if you are looking for reliability. Try a 1997 or a 1998.

a hyundai accent. A model that is about 4 years old with 60k miles goes for about $5k (With a/c, auto & CC, all important for highway driving). You should be able to get another 40k miles on them with little problems. If you buy a car with 120k miles you should expect trouble if you plan to use it for long distance driving.

Kia makes some cheap ass cars, but i don't know how well they run. They come with 100,000/10 year warranties, and are slightly cheaper than hyundai accents.

If he hasn't replaced the timing belt yet, don't buy the car. 112k without a timing belt change on a German car is asking for trouble. You would have to buy and and immediately replace it.

A few things to know, VW's are good cars, but the labor rate is about $80 an hour. A car with 112k is going to spend some time in the shop without a doubt, so that's trouble there. Compare this with the labor rate on a honda at less than half that. I'm all about German, but when you're getting cars that are that old, with that much mileage, going German is a huge mistake most times.
