It found the U.S. students placed below average in math and science. In math, U.S. high schoolers were in the bottom quarter of the countries that participated, trailing countries including Finland, China and Estonia.

According to the report, the U.S. math scores were not measurably different in 2006 from the previous scores in 2003. But while other countries have improved, the United States has remained stagnant.

Duncan told a room full of science and math experts of the National Science Board on Tuesday morning that this will hurt the United States as it competes internationally. "We are lagging the rest of the world, and we are lagging it in pretty substantial ways," he said.

Most educational systems (ours included) are extremely screwed up right now. Basically it's push the kid through even if they obviously can't learn properly.

Gone are the days of leaving kids back because then they would get their feelings hurt and the parents flip out. If anything you have a whole lot of high school kids who can barely read or write, never mind doing math and science.

There is a reason kids from other cultures succeed more - they make their kids learn first before playing, and it is a huge priority in their family to learn in order to get ahead.

I remember going over to my Asian friends' house after school and we actually did homework together before playing video games - because his parents told us to.

Well I kow that when I was in 10th Grade in the US I saw the same stuff (in math) that I saww in 6th grade in Costa Rica.... so that kinda says a lot.... 4 year gap.... 16 year old vrs 12 year old....

you hit the nail on the head with this. the countries which are blowing our doors off are also the countries that make their teens test into high schools. education takes on another form when its not free and not guaranteed. i wonder what all the students in the US grammar and middle schools would do to get into high school if their other options were vocational only. i support these countries which filter the trash out of the educational system. think how much lower taxes would be if school districts had 1/3 less students.

all i'm saying is that those countries have very real stratification and caste type systems. . .even in europe which is supposedly civilized and advanced and free-thinking and liberal. . .so when you compare "them" to us, you are comparing only their elite students to our all-inclusive education system. . .apples and oranges. . .and the results of the comparison?? useless, worthless bullshit used by fear-mongering democrats (yeah, those assholes do it too) to justify spending more money on something. . .

Hows this for a solution? Kids need to test into each grade. If they fail their 5th grade exit exam they get sent straight into the army to fight brown, yellow and black people from a foreign land. That should motivate some of these little angels.

required military service is common in many countries. in israel i believe its 2 years, 18 to 20. then you can go to college. it should be required for all. might bring back a sense of country and values to this forsaken land where people are allowed to take your pension and fritter it away and get off with alittle prison time while you go belly up.

Yea a litle military time won't be bad. My parents and grandparents all had military backgrounds because their country was next to hostile governments.

At the very least military training will instill a little hard work and physical fitness in our population.
