Uranium seized in Turkey->

I wonder where the Uranuim was destined for? Trust me guys & gals, there is definitely alot of this being smuggled into the USA, and it is going to be sooner than later that one of these Terrorist groups detinates a small one in a major city. How do you think it possible that US Customs is stopping this shit at our borders??? Dogs are trained to smell drugs, but not this shit. I'd be willing to bet that the people who want it have no problem getting it. Now weather or not the other components for building a small nuke are readily available here in order for these cells to make a bomb, is anyones guess. If they weren't though, what's to stop them from smuggling those in as well???

I think you are a bit off on your thinking. You cannot just get ahold of weapons grade uranium and then build an "A" bomb. You need a delivery system- its not like something that can fit in a suitcase. A large truck perhaps but it is very very difficult and expensive to develop and make a nuke that would actually do some major damage. People are all afraid of some terrorist with a "suitcase" nuke but it isn't like that at all. Actually dogs are trained to find all sorts of things, you would be surprised.

And you would know because.....?

I was considering posting this article yesterday. The article raises an extremely important point.

How much weapons grade uraniaum or plutonium has been diverted to illegitmate users which goes undetected?

When weapons grade fissionable material is successfully diverted to illegimate buyers and end users, it doesnt make the papers, because no one finds out.

All you can do is record the amount of fissionable material unaccounted for by various legimate foreign agencies who oversee the utilization and administration of nuclear material, and hope a fraction of that didnt find its way into the 'wrong hands'.

Something to make u all sleep alittle easier at night.

I beg to differ bro. Any terrorist agency with enough coin to hire a former Soviet Nuclear Weapons Engineer(who are struggling to get by as street vendors in some places) could easily learn how to develop a small nuke if they offered these scientists the right price. They know how to make them, and could easlily have taught someone with the brains to grasp such a task to do it as well. They are called tactical nukes, and are quite small. The original Hiroshima Bomb contained 50 pounds of weapons-grade uranium. The amount found in Turkey was 35 pounds and was in a small tube under the front seat of the smugglers car, according to the Yahoo News report. They have a photo of it there.

should i find the Federation of American Scientists report on unaccounted for foreign fissionable material, or would that just be too much ?

It is VERY hard to get ahold of WEAPONS GRADE Uranium.

The radioactive material from your local power plant or hospital is not weapons grade.

The GAO and DODIG have reported NO missing weapons grade uranium, ever.

RE: the little nukes

We have them, they are called Frogs.....we don't use them because it's cheaper and easier to use more efficient methods of warfare.

Code, the uranium intercepted by Turkish paramilitary forces was weapons grade, according to Reuters news report.

Turkish Police Seize Weapons-Grade Uranium

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish paramilitary police have seized more than 33 pounds of weapons-grade uranium and detained two men accused of smuggling the material, the state-run Anatolian news agency said on Saturday.

Officers in the southern province of Sanliurfa, which borders Syria and is about 155 miles from the Iraqi border, were acting on a tip-off when they stopped a taxi cab and discovered the uranium in a lead container hidden beneath the vehicle's seat, the agency said.

The incident happens at a time of mounting speculation the United States could launch a military attack on neighboring Iraq for its alleged program of weapons of mass destruction.

U.S. President George Bush has accused Baghdad of clandestine efforts to develop a nuclear bomb as his administration works to build international support for an operation to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Officials at Ankara's Atomic Energy Institute would not confirm they had been notified about the material, which Anatolia had reported.

"Our investigation on whether the uranium was destined for a neighboring country is continuing," a Sanliurfa police official was quoted as saying by Anatolian.

Police officials in Sanliurfa and Ankara declined to comment on the case.

Authorities believe the uranium came from an east European country and has a value of about $5 million, Anatolian said.

It was not immediately clear when the operation was carried out. Anatolian only gave the first names of the suspects, which appeared to be Turkish.

Smugglers use Turkey's porous eastern border to import drugs, and hundreds of thousands of migrants each year illegally cross the rugged frontier on their way to more affluent European Union nations.

Police in Istanbul seized more than 2.2 pounds of weapons-grade uranium last November that had been smuggled into Turkey from an east European nation. The smugglers were detained after attempting to sell the material to undercover police officers.

But it wasn't stolen or smuggled out of the US.

Even in western europe with a lot of cash, it's not easy to come by. If it was, we'd have terrorists using nuclear bombs instead of planes.

A nuclear bomb, even if ineffective would instill far far more fear in the US than an airplane.

ok. I was starting to wonder there.

Your statement :

The GAO and DODIG have reported NO missing weapons grade uranium, ever.

was in reference to US fissionable material being diverted to illegimate sources. I thought u meant the GAO and DODIG have reported no missing weapons grade uranium, in the world, ever.

No sorry, someone else was implying in this thread that stuff goes missing in the US all the time.

Which isn't true. Just getting near weapons grade uranium required an SCI clearance.

this was perfect timing, before congress passes the 'plan' on iraq, it occured in turkey which is a close ally of the US, im not saying its a setup, but we never know, bush really wants to attack sadam

set ups would not surprise me. Anything goes in war...and politics. Almost.

It was the Turkish officials who screwed up the amount not the media. Well, who knows for sure. The whole thing could very well be a setup- you never know.

Doesn't anyone remember Physics 101
Criticl mass is 5kg. That's the minimum amount necessary to initiate the fusion reaction that results in the mushroom cloud thingy...

Don't worry! The Nuclear Agency checked it yesterday and the stuff in the tube turned out to be junk, no radioactive material at all.
