Ultimate Fighter vs Contender

New member
I watch, tape, and re-watch both, but I find myself getting a little more into The Contender overall. Any opinions?

I think the fighters on the contender are better at what they do then the ultimate fighter guys, but I hate how the contender is played up with slow mo shit etc and the music , ultimate fighter is basics and to the point

I read that they sink 1 or 2 mil per episode; I don't know how it translates into a better show, but I like it more.
One thing I think is fair to the fighters is that once they win a fight, they don't have to fight again.
They are also at less risk for injuries. The challenges and the rivalries I would say are about even.
I stil can't say definitely why I like it better, though. Maybe I'm being subliminally influenced by the over-dramatic music!

Ultimate Figher seems more "real" to me. It's not over-produced and it doesn't go over the top, which is why I like it more.

You are basically comparing apples to oranges. They are two completely different shows, targeted towards two completely different demographics, with two completely different budgets. In terms of goals and expectations placed on each show, TUF is clearly the winner. In the cableTV share the UFC has, they have far surpassed the expected/desired ratings for the show.

I personally don't like the Contender, but that doesn't make it a bad show as I'm not the target demographic for them. IMO, I feel like I am watching footage from the projects here in New Orleans w/ a movie star showing signs of the early stages of senility thrown into the mix. I don't know if its the GH or what, but, Stallone is starting to go downhill in the head thinking that he is in any way an authority in boxing. I understand the marketing perspective on why he is thrown in there, so I can't fault him for it in that respect. Another thing that bugs me about the show is how Mark Burnett tries to throw too much of his over-dramatic movie-wannabee crap into the show. I'm sorry, but you can't throw in symphony music that sounds like its from the soundtrack to a classic film into scenes in the show where you have some boxer saying, "this is for my family homie.. I gots ta get food on da table for dem" or "Hey, I'm talkin' yo! why don't I come down dere and whip yo ass right now dog! I'm da best! East side fighters for life homie!" I'm sorry, but classy/civilized music and today's current state of boxing just don't mix.

The Contender will continue to fail to meet their expected ratings, b/c to put it bluntly, the mainstream networkTV audience who watches realityTV junk are just not interested in any combat sport, especially boxing.

I've only seen the Contenders last episode, but I will start watching it from here on out. I like them both, but will lean towards TUF simply because my interests lie more in MMA that boxing.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I'm interested in seeing how well TUF is actually doing in the ratings. Anyone have a link? Spike is very clever in putting the show right after Raw. I don't watch wrestling, but I can just imagine how many wrestling fans watch that extra hour on Spike just b/c it's on the same channel right after their favorite show. Kinda like when NBC put anything after Seinfeld, it worked, but as soon as they changed slots, it usually plummeted.

I hope they get some extra viewers from the wrestling set. I'd love to see the sport grow even more.
One thing that sort of irritates me is when I go to a friend's house which is a designated "hang out" spot. Mondays, everybody blows a damn blood vessel when wrestling is on, but they all seem to hate TUF and all MMA. They claim it's boring. One jackass in particular(who happens to own the house) repeatedly says "Professional Wrestlers are the greatest athletes in the world."
I swear I want to put him in a rear naked choke and make him say "wrestling's not real!!"
I give some of them credit for doing some real acrobatic stuff, especially as big as they are, but it's still staged.

LMAO!! Proud day for him and his family. :( I'm sure he would say HHH would beat CroCop in round 2 via sledgehammer right? ;).

About TUF ratings, I believe you can goto MMAweekly or any wrestling website and they will post the ratings each week. The show has been doing b/w 1.5 and 2.0 and they would be happy w/ a 1.2!! This doesn't take into account the people who wait to watch it on Saturday nights b/c the show is on too late on a monday night for them.

Yeah, I don't get the fascination with wrestling. I used to watch it when I was a kid, but now it seems so childish.

I know they have different budgets, and somewhat different target demos(even though they do overlap ). None of that really matters here, as the question was about who watches/likes which show better.
They are similar in many ways.

to answer that question all I can say is this: I eagerly await TUF all week while you problably couldn't pay me to watch the contender.

TUF wins... Flawless Victory.... FATALITY *<<--blood drips from that word as you hear and see it*

wow. you don't like even the fights?? I can see how the rest of the show can be a little over the top. And I'm right beside you trying to figure out how Stallone could see himself as more than a boxing fan.(I still liked him in the first two Rocky movies, though).
Overall, I see how there could be improvements, but I'm just so happy to see a "boxing-related" show being pushed.

the fights are one of the most annoying parts of the show b/c of the editing. They cut out the parts where the boxers position themselves and feel out the opponent b/c the average viewer doesn't appreciate that aspect of the game, but I think it is just as important. I can't stand the over dramatic music and audience cut-scenes.

I've totally forgot about the Contender after the second episode. Think they'll cancel it before the episodes are over?
