ulcerative colitus - anyone out there?

I've had it for over a year now, but it's just been diagnosed. It did flare up, sometimes I could eat lots of anything (I had a pretty good bulk cycle a few months back) but I think ECA really fucked it up and the cramps and gas got to be too much.

I've been on the SCD (Specific Carbohydrate Diet), you should really consider getting the book "Breaking the Viscious Cycle", it almost immediately stopped most of my symptoms. Then I started going through my refrigerator and started picking out things that had ingredients that caused the problems and I was shocked by how EVERYTHING I was eating was causing the probelm to get worse. And unfortunately, the bodybuilder's typical diet is full of these things. During flareups you should consider avoiding:

Anything with even small amounts of lactose (including whey powder:( )

Any and all grains (Rice, flour, bread, oatmeal, pasta etc)

Any starchy vegetables (potatoes, yams, most beans, even soy)

Any canned vegetables or sauces (ketchup, canned tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, taco sauce, etc)

Any refined products (sugar, some sugar substitutes have lactose in them too)

Your allowed foods would be:

Lean Meats: Any and all meats except smoked meats, processed meats, and canned meats (tuna and salmon are OK). Eggs are good, except during diarrhea spells.

Vegetables: Raw or fresh, non-starchy. Beans can only be Lentil and Navy (white) beans and should be soaked 24 hours in water and rinsed thoroughly, all other veggies OK.

Fruit: Is OK! Natural Fructose is the only allowable sugar besides saccharine. Use in moderation during diarrhea flareups. Avoid juices. Don't worry about the carbs, you're probably malnourished and fruit is one of the few natural foods that you can actually digest properly (nutrients and all)

Nuts: Unsalted, unroasted almonds, peanuts, cashews, etc.

Dairy: Some dairy products have been pasturized long enough so that the live cultures have predigested the lactose. The problem is most commerical products still have small enough amounts to cause digestion woes. If you must have cheese, get the ones that have been aged at least a few months, and that have no other additives in it (Most fat-free and grated cheeses have tons of crap in it that will only make it worse) But Cheddar, Havarti, etc. by the block. No Mozzarella unfortunatley

Oils: Oils from grains are OK! (Flax, safflower) Olive oil is best.

Give it a shot, it's a very healthy diet either way and can be used to bulk or cut with a little bit of creativity. And most importantly it should help you feel better.
