_ An unidentified light in the sky has captured the imagination of some New Jersey residents. Several witnesses claim they saw a flickering golden light in the sky over Arthur Kill Sunday night. The big question is now is what was the mysterious light? The term UFO is already being tossed around by some folks in Carteret.

It's exactly what UFO buffs dream about, an unidentified flying object. We are told the lights showed up shortly after midnight Sunday morning, right over New Jersey. Those who saw it say they will never forget the moment they looked upward and were gripped by a dazzling array of lights.
Something, someone, some 'it' lit up the sky above New Jersey this weekend and authorities are baffled. Cateret police Lieutenant Daniel Tarrant say it with his own eyes.
Lt. Daniel Tarrant, Carteret Police Department: "I saw approximately 16 ... orange-yellow colored lights. Several of them were in a 'V' type formation, others were just scattered around the 'V'.

At least 15 callers contacted the Carteret police department, wondering what was up in the sky, as a formation of lights quietly, and some say beautifully, glided across the heavens.

Our own intern, Joe Malvasio, witnessed the light show as he headed South on the New Jersey Turnpike. They cars, he said, pulled over to avoid an accident and get a better view.

Joe Malvasio, Eyewitness News Intern: "It was one of the most amazing things I think I've ever seen. It was just hovering and then all of a sudden they disappeared, like one at a time, each one started to fade until they were gone."

Whether they saw it from their vehicles or from their homes, the description of the sighting has been consistent from person to person. All clearly remember how the lights travelled, how they flickered out one by one and how it all ended as mysteriously as it began.

Officially Carteret police are not investigating. Unofficially, however, they have put together a wanted poster.

Meanwhile Newark Airport officials say there was no unusual flight patterns reported early Sunday morning. McGuire Air Force Base says none of their planes were airborne at the time and the National Weather Service says Mother Nature also can not be blamed for the lights. And eyewitnesses are adamant that these were not flares or fireworks.

Making UFO's

When I was a kid we used to go up on this hill and tie a small Strobe Light on the bottom of a kite at night and reel the line out. We made that thing dive and hover and do all kinds of loops. Those dumb ass people in town were calling the radio station about UFO's. What a joke.

We even pulled the old Big Foot (gorilla suit) trick one night up the canyon. Went pretty good till some fool started shooting into the woods at us. Almost drowned getting across the creek to get away.

There's a sucker born every day.
