It really depends on why your knees are 'bad'

Any time I do any sort of leg movement (squats and leg curls, specifically) my left knee 'pops.' No known cause, it's just always been that way. Doesn't hurt, doesn't seem to affect anything..

More recently I've had a dull ache in both knees, from trying to deadlift too much. ( who, me? ;) ) I won't make that mistake again.

Both of my knee problems are pains in the ass, but neither is serious. I full squat and deadlift without problems. (unless you consider people telling you full squats will destroy your knees a problem!)

So really, it depends on your specific knees and their problems. There's undoubtedly a resource to help you, somewhere or another.

my right knee crackles if theres any weight on it at all (even just stairs) it doesnt hurt at all.. at any time though.. but it is quite noticable.. but have never had it checked out at a doctor because it doesnt hurt .. even when doing squats..

try beefing up your VMO first and see if that doesn't fix your knee pain problem. In most people the VMO is weak and thus causes the patella to not track properly causing pain.

The VMO atropy faster than the othe quad muscles when you layoff, so hense the lack of balance when you return to training. Also why when you start training, one should do stepups and split squats to strengthen the VMO before doing squats.

Doing box squats and PL squats will just amke the problem worst, since your VMO will just about shrink

That probably isn't accurate advice...not completely true. Box squats have been a Godsend to my knees for sure...

I have recently switched from normal squats to wide stance box squats, and although it has switched the load from my quads to my hips and hams, i have little to no discomfort in my knees any more.

I meant doing Box squats for a period of time and then see how much quad you have left and then try and do some high bar full squats and see how well your knee holds compared to when you were doing only full squats.

Interesting point Cool col. Maybe box squats give the illusion of helping by taking all the stress off the area. One more reason to throw in front squats.
