as long as you use a dynamic (constantly changing) IP address you'll be rather safe.
usually (but not always) cable, DSL and other fast connections have static IP addresses that don't change.
Dialup services like AOL, Earthlink, etc have dynamic IP addresses that are different every time you sign on.
The feds would have to work with AOL to try to determine who was using that specific IP address at that certain time/date. It would be difficult even for AOL to find the IP address, then find the location of the computer using it. Very tedious and difficult, and most likely wouldn't be done unless it was a very serious situation.. not just a personal supply of roids being bought or something else not too big.
Having a dynamic IP-adress doesnt make it harder for the feds to track you.
In the header of emails you can find the IP-adress of the sender (some mail-servers clean the headers for you).
If you use a Dialup and get a Dynamic ip, and the feds finds a post on a board from an IP-adress, they will check the IP-adress at ex,
www.iana.org, and find out what company/ISP who owns the IP. Then they contact the ISP and say that they want to know who was connected to the internet with the ip XXX at the specific time. The ISP will then hand out the phone-number that dialed up to the internet.
They can also do this (if they have the logs, and they most probably have them) if you are connected through Cable.
You can never be 100% positive the information you sent was not decrypted/cracked, but if you are using a strong encryption algorithm ( 3DES - Triple DES) you are as safe as you can be..
Im not sure what Elitefitness-email uses, but what do you do when the feds knock down your door, and tells you to open your EliteFitness account, or they will put you in jail?
Or, if the password on your Elitefitness-mail account is the same as your ISP/Operating system password? Dont think the feds will try to "brute-force" your encrypted files using all your passwords? Think again..
Always stay safe.
* Use PGP ( Pretty Good Privacy) to encrypt email/files.
* Delete all files/emails when you have read them. ( use the "Wipe" function in PGP on the files.
* The password you choose to use on your private-key should be a difficult password, and you should not use this password anywhere else. You should not write it down..
You can download PGP from this page:
http://www.pgpi.org/products/pgp/versions/freeware/
* Use an Antivirus-Program/ on your computer.
The Antivirus Software could block a Trojaner if someone tries to install that on your computer.. Your password is not safe if someone runs a sniffer/keylogger on your computer, and logs all key-strokes..
AV-Software:Norman,Symantec,Sophos,Trend.
* Use an Personal Firewall on your Computer ( Zone Alarm).
This program will alert you if a program on your computer is trying to access the internet.. this COULD be a trojan/keylogger trying to send your passwords to a server..
