Torn Spleen - out 6 weeks.

This sucks man, I was just about to start Var/Dec/Eq for 12 weeks next week.

Doc says no strenous activity especially nothing that uses abdomen for at least 6 weeks. I have to go back and check to see if it has healed completetely.

Im greatfull cause I hadnt even known I ripped it, it initilly felt like I just pulled something in my adbomen while snowboarding. 2 Hours later I wound up falling again on a rail and started feeling nautious. Drove 3 hours from Vermont to NY and finally passed out in the passenger seat from bleeding internally. My girlfriend freaked out and took me to the next hospital off the of I87.

Best of all is it is one of the most excruciating pains I have ever felt and doc wouldnt give me pain meds outisde of Hospital ehh..

Any Docs out there want to offer a second opinion as to when I would be able to get back in the gym? How long does it take to heal? How long shoud I wait before I even consider AS? I cant think of an excecise I do which doesnt use abs even in the slightest way.

Any feedback would be appreciated...

damn man..internal bleeding, thats no joke...they had to do surgery right to close it up?...i would take the full time they say, last thing you wanna do is put more strain on it and re-injure it during a workout.

No surgery,

I had 2 options they said, remove it totally or let it heal and keep me hooked up to IV.

They said the tear was not that big that they needed to remove it. I didnt ask the doctor but my friend asked me what happened to all the blood that escaped from my Spleen? Umm thats actually a good question. I know they didnt drain it.

Can it re-open from blood pressure going up?

In high school I was playing street football and got knocked down pretty hard. My weight landed on the football causing the wind to get knocked out of me. But a few minutes later I though I had broken a rib. Turned out that I hurt my spleen.

Spent 5 days in the hospital. Even though I was in pain, they did not want to give me anything strong. Their reasoning was if my spleen burst, they wanted me to know it.

Another strange thing was that I was getting really sharp pains up by my collar bone. Thought I might have broken something, but the doc said there is a nerve by the spleen that was causing the pain in my collar bone.

Anyways, turned out allright and they didn't have to take my spleen.

How long before you were in the gym/playing football again?
The Spleen filters out the blood , without a spleen or a spleen that is not working 100% does this place extra burden on the Liver? Kidneys?

I have the same exact pain that youre talking about , but mine does not go all the way up to my collar bone it terminates in my shouldefr right where my rotater cuff is. Doc told me same thing, its a nerve that runs up the body. The pain in the neck shoulder is worse than in my abdomen, its sharper..

The pain was pretty sharp and made sleeping a bitch. I don't remember how long of a layoff I had. That was in high school and I am 40 now. Memories fade a bit. I wasn't playing organized supports at the time. But I did play outdoor racquetball which I was almost addicted to at the time. So am pretty sure that I was back out playing within a few weeks. I also remember that if I did too much activity my side would start hurting. But be young and stupid and I would just sit out for awhile and then start playing again.

During my hospital stay I was sharing a room with a young guy that was there because his lung collasped doing coke. Not sure of how that would happen but that is what he was in for. He was on oxygen and his friends bring him a joint to smoke. He offered some to me but I declined thinking this was not the best thing to do in the hospital. So he sparked it up himself. I could just see the oxygen tank blowing. Was so glad when that guy checked out.

Hosptials suck.

Thanks for the info buckwheat1.

Doctor wasnt really clear as to when I would be able to go back , initially he said 6 weeks and then he said cardio within 2 weeks. And even then I was confused as to what his definition of working out was.

Family is not to suportive either my mother cme to visit me and she was like , why do you need to snowbaord? The motorcycles the snowboards they arnt gonna pay youre bills , youre gonna die. I had other family members telling me how ill never recover from a spleen injury. And they only information they had was when they were in the army in the 60's ( Because we all know medicine hasnt evolved much since then ).

Its just frustrating, Im looking for the wrong answer I guess, im looking for someone to turn to me and be like oh yea youll be able to go to the gym in 3 weeks and do youre cycle in 8 weeks.

I guess time will be the only thing that will tell. That sucks.... heheh :p

Man thats serious, getting injured in any way and not being 100% sucks, even minor muscle pulls or soreness that lasts, seems i am just getting over a string of those, take it easy and recover right, you can always make your gains up when healthy, ease back into it,start maybe by walking or other cardio, keeps your heart strong and if you can keep the fat off it will be plus.good luck.

This cat scan was taen almost 2 weeeks later. The spleen has clotted and it has formed a bubble of blood inside the spleen, which if im not carefull can erupt at any second!!!

Say elo to ma little spleen!!!
