Topamax as a weight loss drug????

GinNJuice

New member
I did a search on "Topamax" and found a few things, including a side effect of weight loss.

Does anyone know how effective this drug is for weight loss?

I know someone who just started taking it (not perscribed) to help her lose weight, and I want to know how effective it really is..... (if it's worth it for that purpose)

Thanks,

GNJ

It's a migrane medicine, NOT a fat-loss aid.

Adverse side effects were generally dose-dependent. Among the patients receiving 100 mg of TOPAMAX® daily, 20 percent dropped out of the study due to side effects. This was true for 33 percent who took 200 mg of TOPAMAX®, 17 percent who received 50 mg of the medication and 10 percent of those assigned to take placebo. At the 100 mg dose of TOPAMAX®, the most common side effects that occurred at least twice as often in the topiramate group compared to those who took placebo included paresthesia (sensation of pins and needles in the extremities), loss of appetite, anxiety, language problems (primarily articulation or "word-finding"), memory difficulties, mood changes and nervousness. Other common side effects occurring more often in patients taking topiramate included taste changes and weight loss. When they occur, these side effects are temporary or resolve once the medication is discontinued.

Mr. X,

thanks for the reply and I'll forward that info to her.

BTW, I've been calling her every night to find out what sides she's been feeling. She's been taking it for one week now at 25mg/day.....

During the first three days she was feeling lethargic, was searching for words (while we talked) and had a loss of appetite.

But, after the third day, she was no longer feeling lethargic and was more articulate.....but still had the low appetite.

Her current plan is to up the dose to 50mg next week... but again, I'll forward this info.
