Too much water?

Someone told me today that you can drink too much water in a day and it's harmful. Does anyone know if this is true and if so, how much is too much? Also, what's the minimum amount I should be drinking while I'm trying to lose weight?

The amount of water you would have to drink for it to be unhealthy would be nearly impossible to do. Personally, I drink about a gallon and a half a day without any problems.
 
drink up. keep it under 10 gallons a day and i dont think you have to worry :)
 
Yeah if you drink too much you can over-exert your kidneys from constantly flushing out all the water and they will eventually shutdown. And then you die.

It likely won't happen unless you are on ecstacy or some other water-retaining drugs.

There is a balance to be stuck here, hydration is good, but anything to excess causes problems for your body. It is possible to consume too much water, which if combined with excess sweating (like if you are taking ECA for example?) can lead to Hyponatremia or "water intoxication”.

As you consume large amounts of water over the course of a day, blood plasma (the liquid part of blood) increases thereby diluting the salt content of the blood. At the same time, your body also loses salt by sweating. Consequently, the amount of electrolytes available to your body tissues decreases over time to a point where that loss interferes with brain, heart, and muscle function! You have to replace these electrolytes! They're essential to the normal electro-chemical operation of your nervous system.

Though the condition is opposite to dehydration, the symptoms generally mirror those of dehydration (apathy, confusion, nausea, and fatigue), although some individuals show no symptoms at all.

That said, you do have to consume a huge amount of water and sweat a lot to get into this state, it is more associated with long distance runners who do not eat and therefore do not replace the lost electrolyte’s, than strength athletes. Just to be sensible! I’m no expert, but I would say that 2 or 3 gals is fine, however I cant see why the body would need 4 gallons or more in one day.

Ok, the lady who told me this said something about electrolytes but when I said I had drank 3 quarts of water yesterday she said it was bad. I couldn't understand how that could be too much when you're supposed to drink at least 2 quarts a day.
 
Yes, its called water intoxication. I would stay under 4 gallons a day. You'll know if you have it, you'll being making a trip to the emergency room or the morgue very shortly. Its pretty hard to do, but people have died from it. I drink 2 gallons a day, which is quite safe.
 
A balance in hydration should be met daily. Recommended water per day is 6-8 glasses (8oz), which is adequate for the normal individual. Some will recommend it on your weight, so if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink 150 oz of water - that would be a lot of water...approx. 19 glasses at 8 oz each. That is one plus per hour of you awake time. You do not need that much.

Water intake will vary upon the individual. Normal indiv. should consume 6-8 glasses. Bodybuilders, athletes, etc may need high intake depending on their workouts and how much they sweat. Each athlete varies...some sweat more than others. Use the 6-8 8oz glasses per day as a starting point, BUT - Get to know your individual body and know what you can and cannot do. That is the single most important advice I can offer.

Ok, so I've been trying to stay between 64oz - 96oz a day.... Is this ok for me? (I'm 170lb and haven't started working out yet).
 
there was alot of hoohaa recently in the media about water consumption... i think as long as you're urine is somewhat clear is a good indication that you're drinking enough water. for me that's about 4-5 litres a day

The calculation would be: 30-35ml/kg, minimum 1500ml daily, and acordingly 1.2 - 2 ml per calorie

Yes he is right, some marathon runners have consumed too much water, but it is near impossible too do. I drink about a gallon a day too.
