Too much shirt ?

donsj

New member
My brother just bought a triple ply Inzer and for good measure got one of those new Rage X shirts too. I told him I thought these shirts might be too much in that the weight required to get the bar down is probably going to be more than he can lock out. Any experience with this ? Seems like a good way to get a bar in the face.

Too many variables to really say bro... It all depends on how long he has been at it... The fit of the shirt, his level of technique etc, etc.

Bench in a rack - that is one way to find out.

Yeah, like the others said... to many variables.

I watched Dave Tate in a local meet and he couldn't get 700 to touch in a Metal Poly/ Denim thingamajob.

Not saying that it was too much for him but sometimes you have to break them in and sometimes it's just too much.

You decide

start hitting the lockouts if thats the shirt hes gonna be using..
and make sure to use spotters that know what they are doing..youll need 3

i'm surprised nobody mentioned this: that shirt isn't legal in all feds. if he's competing, make sure he's only competing in the feds that allow it.
if he's not competing, thats a pretty advanced shirt to be training in.

We both lift in several feds, one of them won't even allow velcro backs so we have these pull over jobs, but other feds are pretty wide open

If he's using a "triple ply whatever..." chances are anything goes.

Regardless, that's a lot of friggin shirt :qt:

It could just be a matter of learning the shirt (and the cut of it).
I borrowed a friends single ply denim. Its too small for me, but it sits on my shoulders enough to be a legal fit.
I couldnt touch 495 with it on. It would probably take 550+ to get it to touch... maybe.

The point?
That was a single ply denim, concievably not "too much shirt". It is most likely just a case of my needing to "learn" the shirt...

shirts are for people who have an ego problem!!!! how much does he do raw imo u should use a shirt untill your over 450 raw! unless ur under 200 and doing 400..

well i can tell you this you arent going to do well on this board when you say things like "shirts are for people with ego problems"..this is a powerlifting forum go back to bodybuilding.com

nothing wrong with competing raw..
just dont put other down for using equipment that is LEGAL in their federation..try laying a bench shirt down under the bar and see how much it can lift...

this is ridiculous, bench shirt r for lifters that cant leave there egos at home when they go to the gym. IF U CANT LIFT THE WEIGHT RAW U CANT LIFT IT!!!!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
Who gives a crap if its legal, how come bench shirts r legal but wrapping ur elbows in knee wraps isnt?????? all these super tight shirts and suits r cheating, do u guys hav any strength at the bottom of the press, cos the way im reading it 500 wont touch the chest so basicall when u guys r sayin u benched 550 or watever with a shirt u really mean u did a 550 half bench assisted lock out???? cos the bottom portion of the lift is done for with the springy shirt.
i said this elsewhere that theres a guy at ,my gym who can do a raw lift of 200, he puts on a SINGLE only ply shirt and he can put up 290, if thats not cheating then theres something wrong with u guys, cos it seems pretty obvious to me it is.

cheating who? the meets i lift in everyone wears shirts, i would be cheating myself if i did not wear a bench shirt in meets, i would lose to guys who were weaker than i am. it would be like taking a knife to a gun fight. powerlifting today involves gear, right or wrong thats the way it is.

but im saying for the sinmple fact that i lift in the teen class i dont think there should b allowd to bench shirts in the teen class!!! even thought i can out do most teens in a denim when im raw

Come on man ? Are you telling me you lift in meets raw ? Shirts are also for people who need to lift heavy but have shoulder problems that are remedied by the shirt, it is not an ego thing at all, it is more of a "brains" thing.
