I get sore throats a lot (go ahead make your joke) and am thinking about getting my tonsils removed....few questions if anyone can help

What do they actually do in the body?
Are there ANY reasons not to get them removed?
Will your voice change?
Do they have anything at all to do with thyroid?
Has anyone here had them out? happy with it? sad?

I still got everything God gave me except hair, foreskin and an umbilical cord.

as far as i know yuour voice wont change significantly

they are lymph nodes, but dont contribute to immune function in the sense if you hack them out it wont affect you immune system

basically they are like big bug filters at the back of your throat and are supposed to filter out the infection. occasionally they get clogged which is where the tonsillitis happens

no link to the thryroid as far as i know...as for reasons not to, its just another op, and if it is a sore throat as opposed to tonsillitis i dont know what having them removed would do...what does your doc say?

check out a patient based website like www.merck.com/pubs and click the home edition site....there info is likely to be more accurate as mine is off the top of my head

(p.s. next time spit :D )

this might scare you but I'll say it anyway

I was a little kid when I got them removed and it was back in my old country. my parents took me to this hospital and told me that I'm just going there to see some relatives

the only relative I saw there was a cocksuckin doctor who put me in this chair, tied my hands to it and drove me downstairs somewhere where there was about 10 other people getting them removed. scariest feeling at that point in my life cause everyone was screaming and bleeding

basically next thing I know I'm getting tied to another chair and he asks me to open my mouth where he does the anasthesia shot... which I dont think actually helped at all but whatver

min later he pulls out his bitchass medical scisors that they use and starts diggin down my throat to cut those motherfuckers off

blood all over and shit, the most disgusting thing I've experienced in my life

I think if they actually quickly cut my finger off it would be lot less painful

by the way I'm sure all this is done lot cleaner in the US.

also I'm glad I got them out, I couldnt breathe at night so I dont see why in the heck I would need them

I actually saw the after the surgery by the way, they were like 2 little gummy bears from what I remember, maybe a bit bigger

and I think Had people holding my mouth open or somehow it stayed open I dont remember what it was

cause I know i wouldnt let that fucker go down their if I could close my mouth

I remember going home the same day I think, but I had to lay at home

it's not that big

hit up your doc tell him you cant breathe

my doc wants to do it b/c he's tired of me coming in with sore throats... I've NEVER had a traditional "fever and nausea" flu. Every sickness I've ever had has pertained to a sore throat.

I got mine out when I was 20. It was the more horrific pain I've ever been in for the first 2 weeks and I didn't feel okay again until 6 weeks later. They took mine out because they were each a little bigger than a golf ball, touched, and pushed up onto the back of my tongue. I couldn't sleep laying down at that point because they'd close my airway.

I had also had 18-20 months of solid throat, tonsil, ear, and sinus infections. I was sick for SO long. While it was utter hell (they cauterized my whole throat, up a smidge into the back of my nasal area, and into my mouth) now I don't get sick so much.

If you're just getting sore throats I don't think it's worth getting them out over. And they generally won't take them out if you're an adult unless you're having serious problems. Oh, and my voice is completely different. My bf of multiple years didn't recognize me on the phone anymore. My voice is considerably higher.

thats exactly how I was

I remember now

and yea going back up in your nose through your throat or something was disgusting

damn I remember everything now, I dont think I was even in school when I got em out but dont remember

I got mine out when I was 21, best thing I ever did. I used to have sore throats monthly.. and get sick about 4 times a year.

Now I never get sore throats, and am rarely sick.

My ENT here in San Diego was amazed I never had them taken out as a child, they were so big.

its true, back in the day they took them out routinely, nowadays they don't take them out so fast because they are a semi productive part of the immune system, but by no means neccssary, and it many cases cause more harm then good.

As far as the pain goes, it was a piece of cake. You can't eat solid shit for a couple days, but just load up on shakes and ice cream (soft serve was good). You won't be comfortable, but you'll heal up quick.

oh P.S. they will likely give you Vicocdan.. that alone is worth it!
