$$$$$ to open your own gym?

New member
If you wanted to open your own gym, what kind of investment would it take to get started? And I'm talking on a level maybe just below what the a "GOLD'S GYM" has to offer. Maybe there are some here that do own their own gym. Talk to me.

To be successful :

I'd say $150,000 ....

6 heavy-duty pro treadmills at $2500 is already $15T
2 good cages $2000 is already $4T
Fixing the place is easily another $20T

Who will go to a gym costing $50T ... that may be too small ... and even if you draw in customers ... it's too crowded .... I would definitely say $50T is not realistic

I really doubt $150,000 would cut it. Maybe by moving into a shit hole with old used equipment, but then you would have to factor in the franchise fee which they wouldn't take if you're moving into a shit hole with old used equipment. When a Powerhouse opened in Salisbury, MD the owner kept bitching at the contractors (who were way behind schedule) about it being a million dollar investment and so on.

Thanks guys,
I've got a windfall headed my way, and I'm just thinking about possible options for investing some of this money.
I'd like to quit my current job and do what I enjoy the most.........being in the gym........my gym! LOL

Delts,

Don't set out to offer something "just below Gold's". Set your goals higher. Better to fall short of high goals than to meet low ones.

Also, think twice about spending your own money on this. Maybe borrow against it or against your house....

Hey Matt, good to hear from you bro. Great advice too, I'm just kicking some ideas around, that's all. This venture would be in addition to other sound investment ideas that I am already contemplating.

A friend of mine a while back told me that he could outfit a place for about 30,000. This is basically because nowadays no one buys machines, they lease them. This brings the initial cost down some what. Of course you have other expenses as well. i hope this helps to give you a little more insight, and good luck with persuing your goals.
