Time For Me To Hang Up The Chopsticks

Jetisin said:

How can you say that? You will never truly know about some of the racist encounters people like Kakdiesel and myself (and our families) go through. Just because that is what you THINK you know about Asian stereotypes and image problems doesn't give you the right to basically say we don't face racism like blacks and hispanics do. No offense, but that is an ignorant comment.

You obviously do not understand that Asians get made fun of, put down, and labelled just like blacks, hispanics, etc.

ps-What about those flattering stereotypes about blacks being strong, fast, atheletic, etc.??

Look, you claim to be an expert on the obvious huh? You are making this MUCH more than it is. I'm as white bread as they come and would never presume to know what it's like to be a minority. However, I don't have to be one to know that on the discrimination scale, Asians are far from the top of the list. That point can be backed up in any newspaper, tv show, or movie out there. And Eyepee's threads were obviously meant to be funny.

I think Kak is choosing to make a big deal out of this for no other reason that the attention it draws to him. Every thread he's ever posted bears that out. He says something so incredibley arrogant or otherwise self-involved, then gets called on it. Then he turns around and accuses the poster of being a hater and how "you don't know anything about me", in and amongst a slew of LMAOs and LOLs. It's as predictable as sand in the desert.

I don't think anyone's mindsets are going to change over this discussion. I think it's important to point out that not all sterotypes are equal. Yes, there are flattering stereotypes, but this was not one of them.

I'm going to give you my reasons for why Kak has very legitimate reasons for feeling the way he does and I think most of you need to chill out with the telling him to chill out attitude and the oh, don't be be such a whiny pussy shit. I think most of you would agree that it takes more of a man to voice your opinions and speak your mind and maybe educate people than it is to shut up and be quiet.

Here are three examples of different degrees of racism:

1. If you are a white guy who can't jump or dance, and someone laughs at you and says haha white boys can't dance, or jump or whatever.

2. If you are an Asian American guy who happens to be in the Chinese Laundromat doing his laundry, and someone (of a different race) turns to you and speaks very loudly and says "I'D LIKE AN ORDER OF CHICKEN FLIED RICE TOO PLEASE WITH MY DRY CLEANING.......HEY!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH??? "

3. If you are a white guy and some black guy comes up to you and knocks your brain out of your skull because you are white and he just found out his great-great-grandfather was a slave and was 2 miles behind a pick-up truck.

What's the difference? Who should be more upset over what just happened to him? Who should expect to hear these comments or have these assumptions made about him on a regular basis. Guy #1 can either laugh at himself or take dance lessons. Guy #2 can also laugh this off, but he will still encounter this type of situation no matter what he does unless he avoids chinese laundromats and restaurants??? Guy #3...that is a horrible situation, but the chance of that occuring are slim to none.

I don't claim to understand all types of stereotypes or racism or if one leads to another and I don't think any of you can either, but with EYEPEE, and the stereotype he chose to portray, he was attacking the very core of what many of you claim you stand for, and that is the pride and right to be an American. As I said, all sterotypes are not equal, and for some minority groups, Asians and Hispanics for example are often still looked upon as 'foreigners' and not accepted as Americans even if they were born or raised here and speak perfect English...this also brings up the point that it is beyond me why speaking 'perfect English' should even be a characteristic in defining one as an American.

Face it. Some types of stereotypes are more negative than others. You can't sit there and say, dude, don't get all pissed off when people make fun of the way some people of your ethnicity speaks because they did not orginate from this country or the way their eyes are shaped because what about the Jews, people make fun of Jews all the time about being tightwads? Or what about blacks, people make fun of how sales on chicken went up during black history month? It's just not the same. It's all negative, but same degree of offensiveness? I don't think so.

(BTW, Rush Hour was a hilarious movie, but that's different, Jackie Chan was playing a foreigner, it would've been just as funny if were someone from another foreign country...)

**disclaimer.
1. I get that EYEPEE is base on IP. I get that he ripped people off and should be punished.

1a. How is making fun of Asian immigrants punishing IP?

2. I am sure that I have just wasted my time writing this, because someone will just come back with some inane comeback and tell me how I'm exagerating or off the mark or how I should just show my boobs or something but don't let it be said I did not try.

BUENO?

or they'll just call you nuts because you're a strong female pix

the only thing i'd add to what you said is that when a minority group such as blacks make jokes about words such as "n*gger" etc... they are in effect reclaiming the word and nullifying its negativity through their usage.

I don't know. A friend of mine, who i've known for 12 years (i'm only 22) is gay so it bugs me when people make homophobic statements as i feel that things like that drive him to alienation. But i never ask peopel to stop doing it, its their right to say what they want.

First off thank you for not flat out attacking me and asking me a simple question in a polite manner.

As an Asian, I find Eyepee's comments derogatory to Asians...make that, Orientals.

Reason being is b/c this guy has created to full flatout threads completely bashing and humiliating orientals (he may have created more threads like this, but I'm new to this board). This is what makes his comments so unpleasing to me is that he obviously has a lot of animosity and bitterness (and probably hate) for us Orientals behind his words if he is going to such lengths. His words are no longer intended to be FUNNY, but rather, humiliating and derogatory.

It is a different story if two good friends were conversing and one made a simple passing comment that was intended as a JOKE and nothing more. But what I, as an Asian, pick up when reading Eyepee's posts is not JOKE material, but material INTENDED to humiliate and put down Orientals as a whole.

This is what I don't like...I'm not trying to stir trouble.

I hope you understand what I'm saying.

well i was looking for something really specific. when i read hie threads it looks like the only thing that seems offensive is his mis-use of the letter 'L'. the story lines themselves are very similar to a jackie chan movie IMO. or a bruce lee movie. watching bruce lee films one would think that all the chinese did was sit around at boat docks and chew on what seems to be a toothpick and just look for fights. not to mention they always 'jump' on bruce lee, not fighting fair. but i loved bruce lee, i looked up to him for his dedication and devotion to the martial arts, damn im rambling off topic. oh well see you guys later.
