Dig bid by terror victims
VICTIMS buried alive beneath the World Trade Center desperately tried to dig themselves out of the rubble with their fingernails, it was revealed yesterday.
Ground Zero workers are now discovering more and more bodies after reaching the ruins of the concourse and shopping mall beneath the Twin Towers.
And the bodies they have found show many did not die immediately.
A Ground Zero worker, named only as Vito, said: “We are finding bodies of people who were trying to survive.
You could tell they were suffering. They were digging through the debris with their fingers.”
The workers have also found half-eaten muffins and full coffee mugs perfectly preserved in the tomb. And there are pitiful scenes of suffering.
In a cluster of bodies, two firemen were found huddled side by side in death. The tragic pair, who have not yet been named, were close to eight colleagues and three civilians.
Vito said the discovery of more remains was causing workers great distress. He added: “There’s a lot of anger there.”
But New York City chiefs have told fire crews they must not leave their stations during working hours to find colleagues because they are undermanned.
They are only being allowed to help out in their spare time.
Firefighters Association spokesman Tom Da Palma said: “It’s important for them to bring their brothers home.
“While everyone was celebrating New Year, they were searching.”
City top brass have also stopped the tradition of allowing firemen to stretcher out the remains of colleagues. But the rule was set aside for the latest 13 — the biggest discovery of bodies in recent weeks.
The remains were taken away covered in the Stars and Stripes.
Nearly 3,000 died in the New York Center suicide air attacks by al-Qa’ida fanatics.
