i debated with myself for a while about whether to post this, because it was really ugly at the end bros.
heres the story: two little bros at my gym were in there when i got there this morning working legs, and i watched them fairly closely, as i had never seen them there before. one of the guys loads up the leg press machine with 5 45's a side and proceeds to rep it out, no problem. his partner gets on there, and you guessed it.......... after 2 reps the weight came rumbling down the slides like a freight train, and basically crushed him. broke both his legs and crushed his bladder. internal bleeding, the whole bit. ems came and rolled that fucker out on a stretcher bros and it didnt look good for him. i tried to get there but couldnt do a damn thing i feel really bad about this and it shocked the shit out of me.

im still shakin...................

Alot of people in gym are so obsessed with what weight they are lifting rather than focussing on proper form. Some of my best workouts are those that I have liftend not even 50% of my 1rep max with. Its about intensity and form not weight.

Feel bad for that guy though and I wouldnt have liked to be in your shoes :(

Sorry you had to see that. Really sorry that guy had to go through that!! Now did his feet slip off or was the weight just too much and force his legs down?

damn bro., that sucks! On a heavy leg workout day I know not to but over 5 plates, I always ask myself that ?, what if my legs give out and all that damn weight comes down on me?:(

You shouldn't feel bad because you weren't able to help him out, if you could have you would've right! Man I wish him the best, hope nothing is life threating and gets better!

i feel really sorry for the guy and you. i've had two close calls doing leg press. perhaps the most unfortunate thing is that he'll most likely never set foot in a gym again and go to waste.

i watched one guy stick the pins in there, but he must have set them too low, and the weight just came down. i dont think he slipped, i think it was too much for him.

damn, thats like the worst accident that could happen in a gym.I heard a horror story a long time ago about a guy that was using a leg press machine in a school weight room.He was working his calves on i and his feet slipped off and the sled came down and pretty much ripped his kneecaps off.

I bet you most of the guys in the gym felt the "phantom" pain just by watching it happen. I know everytime I see something like that for brief moments I actually feel pain in my body wherever the guys injury occurred. I have no doubt you're still shaking. After my peck tear I dreamt about the sound my muscle made as it tore for about a week.

bpb,
its odd you should mention that, because about 2 years ago i tore 2 quad muscles squatting, and thats exactly what i felt, only i dont know if it was my phantom pain coming back to haunt me, or his that i just saw. and yes im still pretty wound up as of now.

Wait a minute...

As bad as this sounds, and I do feel terrible about it really because some dudes in my gym are just plain stupid about lifting, how the hell did 5 plates on each side crush him? That's only 450lbs. Wasn't there a safety stop on the leg press to prevent something like this from happening? It doesnt sound like there was enough weight on there to break his legs. How old did this kid look? I'm thinking that he was a young dude.

That scares the shit out of me to be honest. Just this past Friday I racked the incline leg press at my gym. I loaded 14 plates on each side for a total of 28, that's 1260lbs! Holy shit, if that came crashing down on me I'd be dead! :(

read the very 1st post bro, these were 2 little guys, at least i thought so, and yes he did put the pins in there as i stated earlier, but i think he put them in too low for his partner. this shit really sucked.

I only get on the leg press when I have two big spotters ready to slam up the weight if I fail. That thing scares me more than heavy full squatting (at least I can bail on the pins there).

When I started back up heavy with weights on got on a the program me and my partner were in the "Lets see how much weight we can rep out with phase" We were doing 6 sets and reps of 15 with 1200 lbs on the press. It sure looked manly with all those plates up there but I ended up fuckin my knees a little bit in the process. Now I go much slower with way strict form and much less weight. Alot of people don't realize you can make light weights very heavy just by how slow you go through your motion of the rep. I wish I would have learned it earlier so my knees wouln't ache in the morning.

nothing you could have done.....

If you werent right there with your hands on the sled...then there is absolutely nothing that could've been done.

My workout partner now, was working out with another guy on flat bench. His foot slipped and the weight came down (415lbs) and landed on his chest. It cracked his sternum. The doctor told him not to stop lifting.

The dude that was spotting him had turned his head when he saw my partner coming up with it so strong. It just took that split second for the weight to fall.

saf, thanks bro, i'll change it....................:)

wasnt sure about the spelling, but wanted it in there.

you gotta think safety number one, then don't worry aboout what the f@ck everybody else is doing. this includes all you "big" dudes ranting about people lifting very little weight in the gym.

I actually like to see guys doing nice form with lower weight...I try to discourage heavy lifting at every turn unless we are talking power lifting or olympic stuff. Big guys aren't always trying to get people to go heavy but your point is well taken because many do "ego-lift" rather than weight lift.

I hope that kid recovers too...hopefully he has a good family and set of friends to stick by him while he's down.

i want to thank everyone who replied here, as i dont know if i will ever get this completely out of my thoughts for a while, it was just a tragedy in the truest form, and i think its gonna take a while for me to shake this one bros.

anyways, thanks for the support and the positive replies.

It's my opinion.....but I think it's an equipment problem. There is always the possibility of failure on the heavy weights.......my Home Legs sled & the one at the gym has permanent limiters on them.....your knees can go just a little past the chest & that's about as far as it will go.

I smell a law suit coming. Deserved or not....leg sleds have to have limiters on them. That's why a squat rack is set up the way it is.

I have had to crawl out of the leg press before - when I have been a bit too ambitous..........

But the machine stops before I could get broken legs...

My legs touch my chest at the bottmo... but I can still crawl out if I need to.

Jesus God almighty, I'll put this one down in my books and even though I don't know this guys name, but the good lord does, I'll keep that one the burner if you get my drift. Shit that is an equipment problem by design fault, I 'm an engineer and this should NOT have been possible. Lawsuit comming BIG time.

yea, when i read this, i got that phantom pain. i have a thing for visualizing it in my head as i read things. don't know if this is normal but i do it. barbell, time will help this go away. trust me, i know. i had an experience when i was younger that i will never forget. i was in seventh grade and i was at a friends bday party. he rented a pavillion and had a dj. earlier in the night, three guys walked into the party but were quickly escorted out. later on, i walked outside and saw a man that had been beaten laying on the steps in the front. paramedics were called and shit. the thing that sets out in my mind is when i saw him, i remember steam comming out of the top of his head and forehead. his right eye was pretty much out of the socket also. blood everywhere. i had nightmares about this and couldn't stop thinking about it for a long time. i now still remember it like it was yesterday, but it's not a painful memory like it used to be. just give it time bro,

wes

this is one of those things where no words come to mind
sad, hope he gets better. I hate seeing brutal shit and not being able to do anything.

Poor guy, that is very bad. :bawling:
Id rather squat than leg press, at least if you fail you can just sit down and the pins will save you, happened to me a couple of days ago actually.

I totally agree, and it pisses me off watching these people

That's horrible bro. Don't blame yourself. There is nothing you could have done. The little bros lifting partner should never have let him try that much weight! It they have been working out together for any amount of time, the lifting partner should have known the injured bros limits. I'm sure you were traumitized witnessing that. I can't imagine what I would have done if I were in your shoes.

Another sad example of people who try to lift way too much weight. It can never be stressed enough that proper form is 10 times more important than the weight you are lifting. This is a prime example that if you can't lift it with proper form then it is too much and you are going to hurt yourself. Sadly this case seems to have gone to the extreme, worst training injury I have ever heard of. I hope he makes a full enough recovery to lead a normal life, though I doubt he will ever hit the iron field again. It's sad to see potential wasted by ignorance. Educate yourselves bros

hey bros,
once again thanks for the support and i hope it will pass with time.
it just kills me that i ws maybe 4-5 steps short of helping this bro out.
as for lawsuit- yes that is a definite in my eyes, but you never know these days.
im thinking of switching gyms....................:(

There is a fine line between enough weight and too much weight...and this is a good example....hope the kid makes a full recovery

Barbells...I know it's scary to see that kind of shit right infront of you, you'll be alright, it will pass with time....best of luck

that's darwin-isum at it's best. if it weren't for ems, he'd be out of the gene pool.

too bad though, it pays to take things slow and easy.

Man my whole lower body hurts from reading about thet poor guy,I hope everything turns out ok,I bet we have all lifted to much weight for the sake of ego before, but not trying to be mean,I bet he'll never do it again:(

Man I shouldn't have read this post :(

me too. i hardly ever get a spot unless i am real tired, and i usually rep with about 9 plates on each side for my last set. probably going to try and get a spot everytime now. good luck to the little man hope he can recover.
