fuck i'm a whiney bitch
and drinking with corp peeps (in my situation, my supervisor and his mininons)
is a bad idea for me, i always argue and debate with them...it's not supposed to be like that, tonight it got a bit out of hand. i should have just STFU but i had a few porters.
and here i sit
all broken hearted,
tried to shit and only farted
jerked off when i was done

lol. don't blow yourself up man. You gotta use opportunities like that to impress, not piss people off.

Your boss was there? he/she is a liberal? guess what, so are you for the time being then!! get with the program, this is how you get paid!

and this is proly why you make more coin than me

Gotta be a company man!

Actually... it's tricky. The corporate guy fights like hell for his own opinions, but the moment the "bus leaves the station", there is no question he's on-board. It's a wierd mix of "I'll fight like hell until then, but once the decision goes down no one will be on-board more than me".

Also, the corporate guy pushes like hell for his way... whether it takes panache, coecersion, empathizing, etc. etc. But all the while, he says "Hey look, I'm trying to sell you on this". You can do a lot more "hard core" selling when you tell people up-front you're doing it.

Oh, and never talk about politics or religion unless you know you're going to agree with your boss 100% on the front-end :P

reputation is EVERYTHING in corporate culture man. You need to be perceived as someone who is easy to get along with, intelligent, fun to work with, and most importantly, someone who produces results.

Something really stupid and insignificant can make or break you.

For me, I was 21, and I was at a company holiday party and taught the VP's wife how to play craps. She was impressed, he was impressed, and from that point on I had the respect from the top. It was simple, I had no idea even who she was at the time (good thing I was polite) and I swear that night is still paying off dividends. That VP always stops to chat with me when he sees me.

It shouldn't bother you dude.

Supplication is depressing, and spineless. Be happy you stood by your opinions. As long as you were respectful they should respect you for it, if they're worth anything.

that's the way i feel.
it was 100% respectable
i despise asskissing employees i.e lestat27

i went out for some beers with ma boss and a few others 2-3 months ago. i didn't exactly agree with him, nor did i find him all that easy to talk to. especially after 3-4 pints of harp/guinness. but he's not a conventional guy by any means, it seems. and we weren't arguing politics or religion. just blah, blah, blah...

being tactful or avoiding potential hot-button issues is fine (not all that interested in debating anyway), but i wouldn't pretend to feel or not feel a certain way just to keep things smooth.

LMAO. I couldn't live like that. Outside of work they can kiss my ass if they don't like my opinion. You earn your reputation by the work you do period.
That is why I like the oilfield. I was out with the regional VP and we both got lit and mouthy and I remember telling him I would wipe his little canuck ass all over the ice. He thought it was hysterical, never affected work at all. If you can't leave work at the office and differentiate then you need to hit grade school again.

I hate the corporate job - Im 27 now and want to get out of here by 35 - Trying to work on a small business or something that allows me to travel all the time.

"If your first instinct is to argue about truth you are not dominating anyone's reality but rather are coming across unsure of your own. Else why would you need for other people to agree? Men with strong realities pull people into them. They do not have to push them on other people. "

something that took me a loooong time to learn......

Yeah it's best to let your actions speak for you. It's true about the dualities of "truth" and human nature's response to being "attacked", but it's tough not to get sucked in to arguing or at least stating your point(s). Actually that seems to be the best route; to simply state your point if need be and disappear, since arguing is generally counter-productive. Get in, get out. Yeah, sounds good to me.

I have definatley made a TON of mistakes in my current job (although I have done very well and been promoted AND this is my first job). Im changing roles in December and I look forward to starting in a new group where I can learn from these mistakes and keep my f'ing mouth shut more
