this is a crock of.....

i need a damn $5 seal for my car to stop the massive leaking of oil. no big deal, right? the shop wants something like $70 in labor to do the job, but i'd rather do it myself and save some money. so i call the auto parts stores.....it's a dealer only part. it's a simple seal for cryin out loud! it's made by FelPro, not like it's a GM part. apparently GM told FelPro that they aren't allowed to make this seal availible to the general public. and we're not talking about a new car either...this is a part on a 91! damnit.

GM's parts department is closed until monday. i need that car back on the damn road this weekend too. fuckers.

valve cover gasket? if so try somewhere else, another company will make it bro,you can get just about naything aftermarket

not a valve cover gasket, i wish!

the seal i'm looking for pertains to GM S-10 4x4s. on these trucks/suvs, the oil filter is remote mounted in the driver's side fender. where it would mount onto the engine block, an adapter sits in it's place with 2 oil lines coming out of it, one "out" and one "return" line. they run to the remote mounted oil filter. why did GM do this? everyone says it is because of the 4wd transfer case, but that really makes no sense because the transfer case is behind the transmission, so how is it in the way of the oil fiter?! anyway, there's some reason for it.

i got a buddy i can call up tonight (if i don't tear the car apart first) to find out what the deal is with that seal. if it's a corkboard type seal i'll just go buy the stuff and make one on my own. not like i havn't had to do that before for other things. just blows, cause i've got a million things to do next week and i'm going to have to start my week off fixing the car.

i have a 89 gmc it came with the adapter your talking about, i had the engine rebuilt an they removed the adapter where you can just screw the filter into the block, you might see if u can do this to yours.

hey plowboy - i checked it out earlier. damn front differential is in the way. i dunno why i've always heard people say it's because of the transfer case, unless they think that a differential is a transfer case or they think that the front differential IS the transfer case. anyhow.....

i couldn't even see where the lines run to, but i was only searching for a short while while laying on a creeper on my gravel and dirt parking lot. didn't feel like jacking it up and even then i dunno how much i'd be able to see with that differential there. i called the shop that i took it to in the first place, i'm gonna drop it off first thing monday morning and they're gonna try to get it done monday. they've gotta get the part (it's a damn SEAL!) from the chevy dealer, so they said they might have it all day just waiting for the part to show up.

ivanoffelitch - i don't have the part number. the auto parts stores (not the shop) told me it's a dealer only part, and the one place was an auto parts store i go into all the time, so they know who i am. they're really good to me there, so i know they weren't full of BS when they said it's a dealer only part. they even checked the FelPro catalog and it's not in there :( but after seeing what i saw today (or rather couldn't see) i'm just going to save myself the headache and have the shop do it. it's gonna cost me $70 in labor and $5 for the part, and if it leaks oil afterwards, they'll have to fix it again :)

normally i'd do something like this on my own, but they're calling for snow here Sunday, and i REALLY don't want to have to do this in the freezing cold on Monday. some things are just best left to others for the "headache factor" involved. i let the dealer rehang my driver's door on that car instead of doing it myself. i've hung a few doors before, and it's always a major PITA to get it lined up right. was less of a headache to just pay them to do it for me, and the price was good.

oh well, car will be in the shop monday, which puts a lot of my plans on hold for monday (And fucks my workout up since i can't get to the gym w/out a car), but i guess it's ok, i can still make a lot of phone calls that need to be made. i'll just make up my workout tuesday. and the good thing....at least my car won't be leaking oil anymore!
