Thinking about a bird

I'm thinking about buying my daughter a bird for Valentine's Day.
Any pointers from experienced bird owners? I would like to get one that can speak but not an obnoxious screamer.

I have a seven month old fancy cockatail. with the smarter birds, they need daily attention to keep them calm. when they're babies, they are annoying, but now she sings, says pretty bird and does an awesome cat call for the ladies.

Don't get a love bird, they are loud screamers.

My brothers bird has the most personality I've ever seen in a bird,or any animal at that. It's a mini macaw.

classic lil' fucker,talks,but never screams.

We bread cockatiels. Only the males will learn to speak...quite the opposite of humans. :)

Cockatiels can be noisey, especially if there is only one and it's wanting attention. They will loose their tameness if you don't spend time with them daily. Cockatoo's and other larger parrots seem to be sweet but I never owned one.

BigSatan,

I've had a lot of different kinds of birds.
I raised parakeets at one time. If you have the time,
and their not around any other birds they can talk a little.

I've had an African Gray Parrot, a lg. bird that is one of the
best talkers you can get. But He (Sammy) was like a two year
old child that never grows up..

I've had finches. And I've had a wild bird, that I saved and
feed and keep it living.

I still have a Green Cheek Parrot. Named Buddy.
I got him at a bird show and he was still very young.
And I can handle him all over..

If you get one get one very young, and if you can hand feed
it, you will have a very good bird.

Just remember the bigger the bird the bigger the mess.

Parakeets are very manageable.

Good Luck :)

Pamela, do Parakeets talk?

Yes they can.
But not as clear as some of the larger birds.
It's best to keep them away from others birds and
all they hear is the sound of your voice and then they
start to mimic the sounds they hear.

Get one very young, and from a breeder if you can.

I've had a Parakeet, Cockatiel and an African Gray over the years.
All could talk to some extent with the Gray being the most unbelievable. He could talk, whistle songs, cat call at women, ring like the phone and you would go to answer it, meow and bark and imitate all the wild birds like crows etc..

All of them make a big mess throwing seeds all over and squirting crap across the room at times. Buy a mini vacuum to keep next to the cage.

If you get a parrot, be prepared for a long lived relationship as many live 20 years or more. Larger ones 40+ years.

I would recommend a male Cockatiel as they can be trained, talk OK and won't take her finger off if it bites her. They won't cost a lot and the cage is also not real expensive.
