Think for yourself

Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality.

To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself.

Think for yourself.
Question authority.

-- excerpt by Timothy Leary

dumb

wasn't cut and pasted from wikipedia.

i was listening to Tool's Salival this morning and they used a sample from Timothy Leary before playing a track called "Third Eye"

and It doesn't surprise me that many people here consider thinking for yourself a dumb thing to do.

Sometimes thinking for yourself leads to inventions/innovations that save people's lives. . .the polio vaccine (thanks Mr. Salk). . .the airbag (thanks Mr. Hetrick). And, sometimes it leads to taking pics of you and your buds doing coke off a stippers tits and then posting the pics on a public website for every police officer in the world to see.

The knife cuts both ways.

wikipedia's pretty cool.

i'm not surprised to find myself saying this: lestat, i think you like tool too much.
well thank you for that uninformed and purely subjective opinion.

I could probably come up with some things that you like too much, or just general traits I find are counter productive for you in general, but I've never really felt it my place to say. I'd much rather just live my life and you live yours.

I think all of the above have enhanced my life in some way

Actually, I went back and looked at lestat's post again. I didn't realize that he had posted that the quote was from Thomas Leary, so I don't think anyone pwnd lestat in this thread at all.

So, back to the original question, Lestat. I have a feeling that you believe that to have original thought or to think for yourself that you have to have a minority opinion. However, sometimes thinking for yourself brings you to an opinion that may be the majority opinion. That doesn't make you less of a free thinker, or less rational than the other guy who holds the minority view, just different.
