Yes the waters where he drowned has very strong currents. It's where a navigational canal (The Industrial Canal) empties into the lake.

Easy to drown if you're not a good swimmer. I can't tread water and sink right to the bottom and even when I could easily run 15 miles, I couldn't swim very far.. Dude should have had a life vest on.

I wiped out one time on a waverunner and would have drowned if it wasn't for the life vest. I wasn't going to wear it but the guy who owned the waverunner insisted I wear one. I'm from the planet stupid sometimes.
