I really think the problem is that the US does not know how to play meaningful "one" games. They're used to playing series. You make a mistake and lose today, you'll try to do better tomorrow. In these tournaments there is no tomorrow if you don't win today. Every other team is used to playing in these types of tournaments. They have no problems using 3 pitchers to get out of the 3rd inning, pinch running for your clean up batter in the 5th, etc... These are all strategies that don't come in until later innings in US type of play.
