In high school, a couple of my friends went to a pentecostal(sp?) sermon where they did such a thing. This girl went up there while the preacher/priest/whatever they are called, went into this trance and began speaking in tongue. After that, she was forever changed. To this day, I still think it's some form of hypnotism

I was raised and still practice Christinaity. I beleive that speaking in tongues CAN happen, it is a gift from God and represents Pentacost. However, what bothers me is that all but 1 time I have seen speaking in tongues when at another church, it just starts at a certain time in the service and feels more like a show or an emotional high that a connection with God. I find it hard to beleive that God will talk with you every SUnday at exactly 11AM when the preacher starts to pray. It is possible and I don't want to judge someone on this issue, but it has always appeared fake to me and I would rather not be around it. Oh and also shamm a lamma ding song a wong tong fuh doo tabading dong knick knack pattwy wack. lol

My opinion on this...Speaking in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit. It is a way of talking to God or through God in a language that the devil does not understand.

Like you said it is a gift and it is used frequently...It is from the holy spirit and can be used when you yourself allow the holy spirit to flow through you.....I can sit here with no pastor/preacher praying and be able to speak in tongues if i so desire.....At first when i first went to church at 18 years old i saw them speaking in tongues, i was very concerned i thought they were crazy ,lol......after accepting christ as my savior and all of that good ol stuff came my gift...It also seemed very fake to me....untill i realized that it is not fake..there are many different ways to view the subject of speaking in tongue.........but imo it is not fake....

I wanted to clarify that I don't think toungues is fake, but I do have some concerns that the majority of people I see practicing it....it does not seem to be genuine, but the person has worked themselves up into it, and it is more of an emotional incident that a true communication from/with God. I don't feel that you can just start talking in tongues, but that the Holy Spirit comes over you and you are allowed to speak with God. It is a rare occurance in my opinion and not near as common as some denominations would have you beleive. But, that can be as simple as denominational differences in theology and we all know how those conversations can get.

exactly...i knew some one who would speak in tongues when ever and where ever and i did not agree....i believe that it is the spirit as well and that you cannot just go off talking in tongues when you "feel" like it....it is a gift from christ but it is throught the spirit!wayneboard1 said:Good post.
