the ski trip from hell.(short version)

rebuilding, getting there

Alright...

Last tuesday night I left from AR to head to KC MO to drop my brother off at my grandma's house. First leg of the trip went well (6 hours). Me, my gf, roomate, and brother were making the trip.

After dropping him off at midnight we went to the casino and stayed until 4:30 AM. We left the casino and headed towards Denver. Around 1 the next afternoon we got to Denver. My roomate began having chest pain and shortness of breath. He checked his heart rate and it was around 120. At first we thought it was just altitude sickness or something and just kept driving. His symptoms became worse and we went to the hospital. They just thought he had drank too much caffeine and had become dehydrated. after that adventure we went to a hotel and stayed the night. The next day it took 3 hours to make it from Denver to Keystone and we just decided to stay in that night and rest after renting snowboards.

The next morning the same symptoms reoccured and we took him to the medical center in Breckenridge. Same story, altitude sickness and dehydration (although he wasnt dehydrated). They gave him some stuff to make him relax, and some oxygen and sent us home. Long story short he wasnt satisfied with those results and took the next flight home and spent 3 days in the hospital for a PULMONARY EMBOLISM(blood clot in his lung blocking blood flow). Holy fucking shit! Those physicians mistakes could have cost him his life. He's in his mid 20's and in good shape. It would have taken a simple dye test to show the clot. For anyone that doesnt know, throwing clots like that kills you most of the time.

(more to come, but that was only half the hospital visits of the trip)

You guys were wearing Chiefs gear in Denver, weren't you? I hate Emergency Rooms, lots of flying by the seat of your pants going on in there.

spu?

okay, second verse... same song...

A couple nights later my gf gets sick with what turned out to be food poisoning. After repeatedly throwing up (and other gastric disturbances) she gets so dehydrated she hyperventilates and blacks out. She fell on top of me trying to get back in bed, so I drove her to the hospital and spent another day in there.

Meanwhile, my roomate is still trying to recover from his stay in the hospital. He's slowly recovering but still cant do everything he could do before. WTF? he's healthy and only in his 20's. His cardiologist said he couldnt make the PE happen again if he tried.

Damn JMO, I hope your roomie's okay. Thanks for letting me know you were in the state.

Chiefs suck.

Yeah, they sure do suck. At least lately. Last time I went I got stood up by 2 EF'ers., didnt even try this time.

If you make it out on another ski trip let me know, as long as I am in the state and not somewhere out of town for work I will come taunt you relentlessly about the chiefs, no charge.

damn bro, thats some crazy shit. I'm glad he got checked out again, that could've turned tragic. How's everything in Breckenridge? I was in Vail this time last year and it was beautiful (it was also my first trip out there).

Anyhow, glad your friend is OK.

Never been to vail, but hear it's pretty amazing. I'm a rookie in the mountains. We actually stayed with friends in Keystone and just wanted to ski breck that day. What an amazing snow year.

I am going to Steamboat in 2 weeks.

Glad to have you back on EF man.

No shit, that's what killed my brother, just over ten years ago. He took a bad fall, hyperextended his knee and tore it up pretty bad. Had to have surgery to put it all back together, and months of rehab. Four days after Christmas, 1995, he was in line at the drive-through window at a Dairy Queen in Heber Springs, and told the cashier to call an ambulance because he thought he was having a heart attack. By the time they got him to the hospital he was blue and cold. Dropped dead, just like that. It was a pulmonary embolism that got loose from his knee and travelled up that big vein straight to the heart/lung.

Your friend is very lucky that someone caught it. I hope someone called up the hospital in Colorado and chewed them out.
