The Skeptical Environmentalist

I would like to point out that as a percentage of income, I give more to charity than the President and Vice President. President Obama gave most of his, based on campaign disclosures, to the church headed by his racist pastor. I gave most of mine to Africa/Asia....Java cares more about brown people than Obama...Just sayin'.

racist!

I am a big time environmentalist, but I don't buy into the global warming bullshit and other left wing eco-treehugging-Idon'twanttoakeashowerorusesoapbecauseIamahippiefagbullshit.

Save a tree! Wipe your ass with an owl.

I'm all for conservation and saving the environment. I don't really buy into the man made global warming smart car driving recycling gimmick though.

Assuming all global warming is 100% man-made....you could eliminate all cars in the United States and it would have almost no impact on carbon dioxide...Not to mention, China recently surpassed the United States as the #1 net energy consumer in the world....and will probably surpass the United States in per capita consumption in the next ten years. Mitigation of impact is probably the most cost effective solution for the United States.

I'm with you on this, especially the bit about wiping with owls.

I differ on recycling though, I think landfills are a crime against nature, and the amount of plastic accumulating in the Pacific is disgusting.

I wish there was some economical way to break down all refuse into its chemical or molecular components.

There are many environmentalist type things that would just be good to do regardless of whether or not they'll actually help with so-called global warming, of which I'm a skeptic. But there's also much that is pointless, such as carbon taxes, and cap and trade. I think those ideas really exist only to provide a new venue for financial speculators. Our cost of living goes up, some fat cats get richer, and the quality of the environment isn't improved one iota.

I agree with you bro!

It troubles me that we agree on a political issue.

The speaker mentioned that feeling good about something you've done may not be the same as actually doing good. This is critical difference few seem to ever really consider.

Witness the atrociously stupid Nissan Leaf commercial where we see a goddamn polar bear toddle down from the Great White to hug some douche in the burbs because he is driving an EV.

The consumer is sold on the idea of feeling good. It takes some real legwork to figure out where we really can do good on an individual level. At that level our options are limited.

Madison Avenue operates on the principle of "Sell the sizzle, not the steak".

Exactly, and this is where Mr. DB, plunkey and myslef agree about trading carbon credits. It's no surprise Al Gore is heavily invested to make billions if a cap and trade system was imposed. You can "pollute", that means emitting a gas essential to life on the planet, as much as you want as long as you are willing to pay a fee and the carbon traders take their cut making billions...At least credit default swaps were based on the value of tangible property as opposed to some government imposed artificial valuation of carbon dioxide emissions... Would you purchase carbon credits/futures in a free market?

I completely agree.

The problem is, this feel-good mentality has permeated our entire social welfare strategy. In the name of helping others, we've created third-generation welfare families locked into poverty for decades to come.
