My day started out sucky. I got four hours of sleep 'cause I had to get up early to catch the end of an eBay auction. In reality, when St. John wrote it, he was jailed by the Romans, and the only way to prevent them from getting any information was to use cryptic messages. In fact, the "number of the beast" 666, formed by the sum of the name of the beast refers to Nero Caesar. Nero was seen like the devil himself those days, because of his cruel torture and persecution of Christians in those days.
In Aramaic and Greek (the two languages used in writing the Bible), each letter has a corresponding number. In both languages, when you add the numbers of the word Nero Caesar (the way it is pronounced in those languages), you get 666. This was an effective way of communication back then, to hide messages from the Romans.
The problem is that many people who read Revelation took the words literally, and identified the number with Satan. It was escalated with the release of the horror movie "The Omen", which portrayed the character as the anti-Christ or "son of Satan." Due to movies like "The Omen", horror stories and general superstition and misconception, many people tend to believe that anything that is associated with the no. 666 is evil.
That's the basis for the belief that on 6, 6, 06, something evil is going to happen in the world, and some believe it marks the end of the world.
So essentially, that's the short explanation.
