The news and supplements (when will it end?)...

I was watching CNN on and off this morning before work and my wife turned up the tv so that I could hear a segment on supplements. They were talking about sports and health supplements and how the Congress is considering what to do. They interviewed some politicians who said that concerns existed because some are misled into believing that they should take herbs, vitamins, supplements (all that have no FDA backing or proof) for cures and don't take the prescribed medicine that will actually help them. To me it's unbelievable that Congress would even care about this. Don't we have more pressing issues for the Nation. What about the economy, un-employment, national security, etc., etc. These people need to pull their heads out of their @$$ and smell the coffee. Sure, maybe the guy who has a heart condition shoulf be taking his heart med.'s regularly instead of the vitamins, and supp.'s but if that's what he wants then fine. We are still in a free country, right(he he)? It almost seems like the politicians want to start yanking supp.s from the shelves. Pretty soon evening primrose will be sold on the black market. Anyone else heard anything?

i havent heard that.

i think that is geared towards claims, like "fat loss" with a pill, better memory with herbs... and so forth.

people believe the marketing because drugs cost too damn much. so they buy supplements and herbs for their problems instead of prescription meds.

Some funny shit!!!!!

Here are some quotes from the link:

" Doctors are trying to determine whether performance-enhancing drugs caused three Maryland State Police officers to suffer kidney failure last week as they competed for coveted slots on an elite tactical response team."

"The three troopers, all men in their twenties, were admitted to Baltimore area hospitals Tuesday, suffering from vomiting and cramping brought on by the same type of kidney dysfunction, police officials said."

"Although no cause has been ruled out, he said, "one thing in particular we're looking at is creatine," a popular over-the-counter performance-enhancing compound made famous by baseball slugger Mark McGwire.

"Many of these people who are looking to enhance their performance are taking supplements," Phillips said. "We think we've got to investigate that." "

HERES THE BEST ONE:

"Ralph W. Hale, a doctor who also is a board member of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, said several steroids and supplements that build muscle have been known to flood the body with protein faster than the kidneys can handle it."

HERE ARE MORE:

"
More common, Fourcroy said, is the use of legal, over-the-counter compounds such as creatine, androstenedione and ephedrine, which fuel a largely unregulated $16.7 billion dietary supplement industry"

Not that this is the only factor, or even a factor, but what if the profit was reduced, then who would be the beneficiaries?

" "Unfortunately, people are looking for shortcuts to enhance themselves, going beyond good exercise and nutrition, and risking their health in the process," Fourcroy said. "It's a problem that isn't isolated to the elite athletes anymore." "

Why Is unfortunate
???? Who cares!! Why doesn't he worry about himself, and if he's worried about children hurting themselves with something as safe as creatine, where are their parents? Also, where are their parents at every meal, and everything they ingest because it is so dangerous.

The story on CNN had more to do with elderly people being targeted by mail. Came up because of some guy who Clinton pardoned is selling snake oil (promising to cure EVERYTHING) and the brochure ended up at the door of some congressman. It really had nothing to do with creatine, ephedrine etc...

I'd like to ask Dr Hale to show me some references to this little phenomenon of physiology. "Flood the body with protein?!?!?" He is a typical Dr. Real science is not required for them to make any claims, simply the fact that he/she is a Dr. should suffice.

Its Folic acid and Tryptothan all over again.

With Triptothan there was one bad batch which infected a few people and low and behold you cannot buy it here at all.

Folic acid improves preganat mothers and their unborn childs health. Its dirt cheap, ahh we know, lets ban it and then you can only have it on doctors prescription - four times the costs!

Here in the Uk and Europe we have had the large German and Uk pharmacutical conglomerates the shitty back door tricks of feeding some BS to the Eu council. Truth is they lose out when u fix yourselves up naturally.

Same mis-information has been tried with the IOC and it pisses me off big time.
