The Music Recommendation Thread

Here's the deal, give me two bands you like to listen to and I'll give you one around the same lines that you should dig. When possible, I'll even dig up MP3s.

I'm bored and feeling altruistic, what can I say?

I was toying with putting down another melodic death band, but instead I'll say that you should give Disillusion a try.

If you like Lacuna Coil you'll love The Gathering.

Try Billy Talent's northern brothers Alexisonfire, they've been on tour together a few times.

From Zero - Haha, whoops! Go with Green Carnation if you haven't already.

alright musicman, this is serious request, not a constructed stumper. I hope you do other genres in addition to rock . . .

I love shpongle (aka ott/hallucinogen/youngerbrother) and illform. Can you think of something else like this to rip apart the fabric of reality. Already have butthole surfers of course. And future sounds of london/orb/aphex twin totally wrong direction. And if you say moby, I'll send you barry manilow's greatest hits for christmas, I swear  I've looked and looked and it appears I've hit a dead end on the tree of music.

Alright, I'm going to give you a few suggestions...

Venetian Snares - Dolls Dolls Dolls
Atomsmasher - Atomsmasher
Phantomsmasher - Phantomsmasher
Lotus Eaters - Mind Control for Infants
Supermachiner - Rise of the Great Machine
Neurosis & Jarboe - Neurosis & Jarboe

not too shabby bro. I've heard of lotus eaters. The rest are new, I'll check them out. And to even know who I'm talking about =
you are
the MUSICMAN,
crown still on right,
not slippin', it's tight . . .

You must spread some Karma around before giving it to Flah again.

And I've hit a dead end on making recommendations of any kind to people on the internet. At least you're into something besides rap, mainstream grunge, and metal bands with names like Rotting Anal Christ Fist...so here goes!

Error-ist - Ping Kong
Techno Animal - Hydrozoid
Random Logic - Moduli Lazuro
Maha Ketama - Hullun Milly
Dave Tarrida - Horrormone
Mu - Jealous Kids
Soul Oddity - Freq Shift
Uberzone - Moondust (Dark Side Of The Moon Mix)
Monolake - Alpenrausch

I like the Dave Tarrida and Monolake from that list, tactile.

Error is great, btw flah, why wasn't it your list to start?

Thanks all.

Ah, I think we're pretty much on the same page when it comes to death sir, so I'm going to guess that you've heard these bands before:

Anata is great tech death stuff.
Wormed is very cool brutal death.
Prostitute Disfigurement is great for gore.
Sadis Euphoria sits on a fine line between grind and death, fun stuff.
Krabathor has a nice old school feel.
Retch is about as extreme as DM gets.
Severed Savoir is another cool tech death band with a more extreme lean.
Blood Red Throne is straight up DM on the faster side of things.
If you want to hear some really guttural vocal work check out Cock and Ball Torture or Animals Killing People.
Of course, I have to mention Disgorge.

trance from 1994-1998 anything new that is simialar?
Sadly, this is not my area but I know there are a lot of dudes on the boards that can point you to stuff. Hopefully they'll post something up.

I'll try best though:

Bottleskup Flenkenkenmike is really cool albeit really weird.
Max Richter is more on the ambient side of things and he's more in line with stuff like Set Fire to Flames, but his new one is very serene and calm. Great stuff.

And...that's all that comes to mind right now.

Flah, you know anything similar to Orphaned Land? Been diggin them a lot lately.

Also, have you ever heard the band Winds?

Yeah, Winds is pretty cool.

Stuff that's similar to Orphaned Land...hmmm...

There's a band dropping a new record in November called Symbosis that shares the same kind of structure without the middle eastern infleunces.

http://www.symbyosis.com/phoenix00/medias/wingsphoenix/symbyosis_life.mp3

November's Doom plays up the more extreme angle.

Lykathea Aflame is the, "Most melodic brutal band ever."

Green Carnation's Light of Day, Day of Darkness.

Agalloch is, again, on the harsher side of things.

There are a few band's who are mentioned in the same breath that I haven't checked out like Paatos, The August Prophecy, and Subterranean Masquerade.

Chicane (Halcyon, Saltwater)

Go with Divercia for the symphonic goth angle and Orphanage for the theatrical element.

I think Divercia is pretty good stuff. Most of the reviews I've found on it tend to whine about how the vocals are delivered - almost in a talking manner - but I think it fits the style of music just find. I really dig "Transylvanian Love"

Yeah, I don't get why people harp on the vox either. I mean...they're vampires people! Vampires don't scream!
