I think that SOB's story evolved after he was captured. He stated he left clues behind to get caught intentionally, but when he was apprehended he lawyered up immediately.
He had several year after the event to glamorize the event in his own mind, but I doubt the interview reflected his true emotions.
He knew he was fucked and wanted to present himself as a cool professional.
