The liver, some good info

DR. NOE

Physicians often warn about elevated liver enzymes due to oral anabolic steroid use. While that could indicate an inflammation of the liver, the problem is that some of the measured liver enzymes aren't specific to the liver and exist in other tissues. For example, two enzymes found in the liver, ALT and AST, also exist in your muscles. Any type of injury to the muscle, including the kind that occurs with intense weight training can cause an elevation of those enzymes in the blood. Doctors may conclude that such liver enzyme increases are an indication of liver problems, when they are not. Some other things such as jaundice, is definely an indication of liver inflammation. This article goes on to tell that most liver problems related to steroids are with people who stay on steroids for 2 to 4 years without ever cycling off. Nolvadex, the estrogen blocker, can cause Peliosis hepatis to the liver, which is a blood filled cysts in the liver . It can rupture leading to death. Bottom line don't stay on Nolvadex for to long and keep your dosage low. There are several ways to protect the liver, some of these are new to me. A drug in japan called Malotilate(Hepation) helps reduce liver inflammation. Another study showed that using ursodeoxycholic acid, a substance that thins bile secretions and often used to treat gallstones, relieved the bile backup induced by androgens. Various herbs also can protect the liver. One example is Astralgus, which works by increasing glutathiote levels in the liver. Glutathione is an antioxidant that also plays a major role in detoxifying substances in the liver, including anabolic steroids. Certain nutrients are know to increase the glutathione systhesis in the liver, such as ALA and N-acetyl cysteine. Milk thistle (silymarin)and lesser known herbal substance called Picrorhiza Kurroa, increases glutathione and also helps regeneraye liver cells. Both Astralgus and Picrorhiza are used in europe to treat hepatitis and help maintain liver function. Increasing glutathione levels in the liver may be especially important, sinse several studies showed that injectable and oral steroids both deplete liver glutathione levels. Having sufficent amounts of chemicals called methyl groups in the liver also help keep it healthy. Nutrient sources of methyl groups include lecitin, choline, betaine and SAMe. Studies showed that SAMe is especially useful for promoting increased bile flow in the liver and may help relieve the bile flow obstruction induced by anabolic steroids. Gamma Linoleic acid (GLA), is also used to protect the liver from anabolic steroids. GLA works because it is a precursor for anti-inflammatory prostaglandins that may be in short supply when the liver is inflammed. What's your take on these other liver protectors, the only ones that get repeated over and over again,on the boards are milk thistle and ALA.

I'm bumping this because GLA is a fatty acid that AAS-users
should DEFINATELY look at.

There are literally thousands of females on Nolvadex throughout the world as part and parcel for beast cancer treatment. Your info on Nolvadex is true BUT EXTREMELY rare and the occurances are with females that are on for years.

Nolvdex acts as an estrogen in the liver, as does clomid, and both are very helpful in keeping hdl from bottoming out during a cycle.

Bill Llewellyyn and Bill Roberts can back me up on this.
Also the idea the Nolva affects IGF-1 in a negative way is a mythy started years ago by Dan Duchaine...again both Bill's will agree with this and they are very well respected steroid researchers.....especially Roberts.

TIME had a recent cover story on breast cancer, with an inset about nolv (tamoxifen). They cautioned that it can contribute to blood clots, although rarely, and with long-term use.

Blood clots from Nolvadex are a potentail side of this drug however, it is listed as very rare in the literature and this is with females taking it long term.

BTW...one has a much higher chance of contracting Peliosis hepatis from the use of 17aa oral roids than with nolvadex long term.

Peliosis hepatis is so rare with Nolvadex use that it isn't even listed as a possible side affect in the drug insert. Very very few cases have been traced to Nolva and again it was with females and long term use.

The positive affect that nolvadex has on serum cholesterol, and especially hdl, FAR out weigh the potential negative affects.
