The deal with white bread

Alright folks, now I'm going to be upfront and honest:

I'm not exactly your most disciplined eater. I like to find ways to 'sorta do a good job' but without trying too hard. I'm just trying to maintain right now, but I dont bother counting calories or any of that bullshit. I'm probably around 15% bodyfat or maybe a lil more. not really looking to cut, just maintain. PS: I'm not lifting right now, but I do about 30 minutes of cardio every day.

Anyways, how much will it kill me if say, I go to some type of fast food restaurant once a day, and get 2 hamburgers or something? Like, I figured the biggest problem is the white bread that they have with the fast food buns,

But I guess what I want to know is: how much will this kill me? If I dont bother eating anything fried, or having any pop when I'm out, will fast food really kill me?
When I'm at home I try to eat pretty healthy. I avoid fatty stuff. I eat whole grain breads. But of course I will always treat myself to something sweet every now and then too, (like a couple cookies at a gas station or something)

How much worse is the white bread on hamburger buns, vs. the whole wheat bread u can get at the store?

In real terms, how much fatter is it going to make me (like if I had 2 mcdonalds doublestack hamburgers once a day)

PS: yea I know, I would pack my own lunch, but I'm lazy, and I like having my food prepared for me, and tasty, and cheap. McDs does a good job at that, albeit maybe not the healthiest.

:fistfullo

A bit more discipline my friend.....

Sounds like you really don't care. If you're not willing to pack your lunch on do any of the other "bullshit" then you're not going to hear what you want. Might as well just eat what you want.

If you can't live without Mc D's, order a Chicken McGrill or two, sans mayo, ask for some plastic silverware, and eat the thing bunless. Or get a chicken salad with GRILLED chicken. (Not the deep fryed, breaded crap). Of course, making the stuff yourself/taking it with you is the smartest option, It takes me 10 minutes tops to cook 2 grilled chicken breasts on the Foreman in the morning...I throw it on while I'm eating breakfast, wrap it in foil, throw it in the cooler with some veggies, and leave the house.

you dont have a prayer..............

If you're going to McDonald's at least ditch the bread and eat the hamburgers plain or get a chicken salad. The better and more fiscally prudent thing to do is actually put forth a small effort and pack some food in a small cooler. A little effort goes a long way when dieting!

much much much easier said than done

yea, actually I really see no point in even buying the hamburger if I'm not going to eat the bun along with it. (cuz that would be a ripoff cost wise) If this is that bad for me then maybe packing a lunch is my only option.

Well, you say I'm not going to hear 'what I want', and what do you mean by that? how bad is this for me? how much fatter will this make me? any kind of specific answer would help. Honestly it doesnt matter me if you tell me what I dont want to hear, because I want to hear the truth, no matter how much it sucks to hear.

No one has still answered my original question. I already know which route is the better route. But thats not what I'm asking, I'm asking "how bad" is the current route that I'm on.

How much damage can a few high GI carbs do, on a daily basis?

Meeting your goals, bro..............you have no desire, no motivation......it's fine to eat like that be lazy, etc.) but you won't reach the physique you are looking for...........

He hasn't really said what physique he was looking for. He just says he wants to maintain. For a short answer as to "How much damage can a few high GI carbs do, on a daily basis?"

How much is "a few"? You're not willing to count calories so I doubt you're going to count your carbs and their sources. So who knows?? It's no only the carbs that are bad in your McD's diet either. There are bad fats, high sodium, other simple carbs, and probably lots of artificial ingredients.

Maybe you should go out and watch the movie "Supersize Me"

it's not your fault, the western world was reared on white bread BUT you must make changes.

we have been disillusioned for so long about what is 'good for us', simply put, you will not die without it. cut it out. it's complete trash for your body. same thing as getting a bag of flour and pouring it down your throat.

you know what, do that instaed. see how enjoyable it is. and come back and tell us how much you enjoy your pb and j sandwich lol.

PB tastes great on Wheat. On the plus side you don't have to worry about the jelly making it soggy like white bread.

I ate white bread from as far as I can remember up till I was 16. Its a hard switch. It will be hard, but it becomes easier after being on it for a while.

This thread is getting way to out of hand.......partially my fault. Here's the scoop kid. Will you get fat from eating white bread instead of wheat, no. Will you get fat from eating white rice instead of brown? No....will you get fat from eating one candy bar or one McD. sandwich a day? No. It's all a matter of caloric intake vs. output. Plain and simple. If your cal in are < cals out, you'll lose weight. I realize you arent talking about a competition diet, and that's where the fine tuning comes into play. But to lead a normal lifestyle, eat some good foods, burns some fuel, enjoy your mcd's, but do it all in moderation.......I'll bet you one thing. Eat cleanly, get on a great workout routine, and take care of yourself for 1 month and you'll puke at the smell of fast food..........

Calories in > calories out. I wish it were that simple! What about the the nutritional value of those calories? I can get 3000 cals a day from white table sugar.

If anyone would eat just sugar they'll likely die of malnutrition.

Well we have people dumb enough to believe they have the right to sue fast food corporations......It just might be worth a shot. New fad diet, Sugar Daddy nation wide.

as far as my goals. Right now all I really care to do is stay where I am, at around 15% bodyfat. I would like to stay this way even as I get older, like 40/50 years old.
15% is healthy, heck I just want to make sure I dont get fatter as I age. (my youth years and fast metabolism are running out) PS: I'm 20 years old btw.

Its funny, because at home I do eat whole wheat bread, because I know thats better for you. I also try to eat sliced lean turkey, and oatmeal, and fruit. But honestly I have a sweat tooth too, and I will eat surgary cereal really easily.

I got a lot I need to work on, I definately wouldnt mind being leaner than 15% bodyfat, I just dont know where the willpower is going to come from, aside from 'within'.

I guess it'd be cool to see some studies, where to see whether the choice of bread effects how many calories someone will ingest throughout their day, or what kind of effect it has on people's weight, etc.

But my guess is such studies probably dont exist. Especially if I havent been directed to any by now.

You're 20 now. You can probably eat whatever the heck you want and be ok at the moment (although 15% isn't terribly low for a guy...it falls in the "ok" range). Eating McD's every day won't help you stay where you're at as you get older and your metabolism slows down. You've got to get into good eating habits NOW and keep them. If you need your burgers, fine. Have a burger ONCE a week. Eat clean the rest of the time. After a few weeks of clean dieting, you won't even want McD's any more, and just seeing the golden arches will make you want to yack.

In the past when I've ate clean for awhile, I can totally relate to this. once you get into a habit of it, you really dont care for fast food stuff anymore.

About the only problem is that for some reason I can never seem to make myself think 'yack' when it comes to sweets. I will always like them it seems like, and always be a slave to them. Oh well, life has to be that way, or else I'd be ripped, and its not fair for me to be ripped without having to pay much of a cost.

Ah ha...true, but they would be thin!!! LOL....ou know what I mean bro......we need to quit analyzing so indepthly.......

Well, 15% Bodyfat is average for an American male in their early 20's, which means you're "average" in a nation of fat asses. At your age I could eat just about anything I wanted and maintain 10% BF. Once my metabolism started to slow in my late 20's it was a rude awakening and I had to start from scratch learning how to diet and eat properly on a consistent basis. It's best to learn early and keep your bodyfat under 12%.
