The big commercial flops: add yours

manny78

Plat Hero
Platinum
Does anybody remember one of these ? Seemed to be the next best thing on earth but today, it's part of the past and not the glorious one.

LaserDisc: Ya know those 12" "vinyls wannabe CDs" that no video rental had and costed over 40$ each to buy ? Yeah my parents had one. A pioneer with Karaoke on it. What a piece of crap.

Beta VCR: so small, so nice, such a cool thing brought to you by Sony and guess what ? Nada today.... JVC's VHS won all the way.

DCC tapes (digital compact cassette): dunno what it is ? never mind...it's just a digital tape...

DAT: great for studios but never catched as a mainstream digital recording system.

MiniDiscs: dunno if it should be considered as a commercial flop but anyway MDs have been around for almost ten years and still day one for them.

Nintendo Robot: with only two games available for that damn robot that's a true flop.

DIVX (not the video codec): some kind of rental DVD that was accessible for 2 days only. Then you had to pay. I wonder if anyone ever bought that crap for real ?

Apple iCube: one of the coolest computers around ever but the price was insane. But that shouldn't new since it's Apple...

Atari Lynx vs. Nintendo's GameBoy: lol......

Atari Jaguar, Turbo Graphix and Neo Geo

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Coke: no need to say anything. We all know it didn't last long.

XFL and USFL

WHA: where Gretzky started......

any other you wanna add ???

We almost bought a Jaguar game system!

Damn that was almost a very bad idea.

How about that 32bit sega system... forget the name of it.

except trailer park boys, degrassi

1. canadian movies

The new degrassi sucks balls. I don't know if it's even on the air anymore. However, everything up to and including "Shcools Out" is gold. That's not bad for 3 different series and 15 years worth of television.

As for movies, Cube and Exotica really stand out as great Canadian films. But yeah, most of our movies suck. Then again, 95% of all films suck...so it's not just us. :)

OS/2 warp

Good one. OS/2 was better than windows, but MSFT killed it anyway to keep IBM out of the pie (which they got from IBM in the first place, evil irony :))

The Nintendo Robot is the only one I don't remember hearing anything about.

Supernav. Microsoft Bob was HUGE, LOL :)

Yes, the Nentendo Robot was bad...

But did anyone have the Nentendo Mat? The only thing you could use it for was the long jump on some crappy track and field game, and it was way too easy to cheat.

Or how about the Nentendo glove? I know I had it, but can't remember what games It worked with. I think Mike Tyson's punch out.

yeah i remember i got it with my first PC, ended up having to get rid ofit when everyone made the switch to win95

Beta [tm] actually had higher quality than VHS [tm]; and was a choice among professionals until digital came along. VHS won because JVC pushed hard and got most of the other manufacturers to come on board. Kinda like IBM vs Apple: except that IBM was willing to license its patents to any and all, but Apple (who made a better product) refused to license its rights to anyone except for a brief spell.

For its time, Laserdisc [tm] was great. Its launch was derailed when RCA came out with their "Discovision"[tm] which was (believe it or not) like a phonograph record in that a needle actually rode a grove just like an ancient LP. If DVD hadnt come along, maybe Laserdisk would have made it as the picture quality on those things was great.

Actually TV stations STILL use Beta. It is by far a superior technology. Unfortunately marketing killed them.

As far as Canadian TV, I'm surprised no one mentioned Kids in the Hall.

anybody remember JOSTA cola from pepsi? it was suppose to have jamacian jiz in it

Kids in the Hall is funny.

pong, the little black box you hooked up to your tv, it had two controllers and the only game programed in it was pong. it was cool though for what it was.

don't forget that odysee(sp) game system.

The robot mods that posted the sex pics -- not our best idea.

T boy has been an unheralded commercial flop. He was kind of offered the presidency and instead leads a singularly unspectacular existence. In his defense, this is because of the economy, he lives very large when things are hoppin.
