The Beatles are overrated

They have some good songs, obladei oblada comes to mind, but overall they are just another band, obsessed with romance with a few good songs. Not only that, but their lyrics are gobbledygook.

how the fuck did they get so famous?

Partly because the country needed a musical kick in the ass. Elvis helped get that started on the right foot, but the Beatles elevated musical artistry, complexity and creativity. Pretty much any rock/pop band today has taken some influence from the Beatles, if they know it or not. Yes, some of their songs are silly, but they've written some of the best lyrics and melodies ever. Name someone in the past 10-15 years that has put out thought inspiring music, and I will give you karma if you are right.

Different time periods = different standards for over-ratedness.

They were british. Anyting out of england must automatically be worhsipped. If the beatles were canadian, they wouldn't have even gotten past first base.

Know what's funny. In England of all places, no one ever cares about the beatles. They were never a big hit in their own country. But the US digs anything that has that sexy british accent that american women go ga-ga over and still do.

Why talk about if Beatles is overrated when critics all over praise crap like Nirvana & Eminem etc.

Those are overrated and over played compared to Beatles.

That was not true in early 1964. Prior to The Beatles, British pop culture was pretty much invisible to Americans. It was The Beatles who MADE Americans aware of English trends in the '60s.

Odd that you'd single out one of the weakest songs from their entire discography...

beatles were just one group of what was called the british invasion

many of their songs are long lived and well aired
we still hear lots on the oldies channel
yes most were quaint and appealing
as was most of the music of the time
what is called music these days i classify akin to garbage
but that is my opinion

anyone know what group out sold the beattles back then
and had as many number one hits?

a group called the dave clark 5
look into it
download some of their stuff if you can find it
paul, john, george and even ringo were good songwriters and muscians but dave clark .... wow!

Not to be a doucheface, but you can't tell someone what is and what is not "thought-inspiring." Music is in the ear of the beholder.

To be fair, they only knocked I Want to Hold Your Hand off the British charts and had 17 top 40 hits compared to the Beatles 17 number one hits (both UK chart figures).

They were on Ed Sullivan more times, so I guess that counts for something.

Yeah, I'll give you that. It's just that there haven't been a whole lot of memorable songs lately. Maybe it's because they put out more crap then they did a back then. I'm only 25 and I realize this.
