The ALAKD diet

MiniColemans

New member
well, maybe some of you read that I've recently been fooling around with ala and carb meals during a CKD.

what I've found is that I can eat basically 300grams of carbs split into 2 meals and still remain in Ketosis.

so i'm wondering what you guys think of modifying a CKD diet this way: After the carb up days, you use a bit of ala, cardio, exercise, high fat (the usual) to get into ketosis, then use ala at every meal and allow yourself to have carbs.

I'm eating 300 or so a day of carbs but I still feel hyperglycemic and I'm deep red on ketostix an hour and again 2 hours after a carb meal.

is a full 5 days of no carbs really necessary?

thoughts, ideas, sugestions welcome :)

Couple of questions:

1) what would be the purpose of this? to satisfy your sweet-tooth? make muscle gains while simultaneously dropping bodyfat?

2) when would you take these 300g of carbs?

3) any reason why you'd try this instead of TKD?

4) how much ALA do you take?

5) when *exactly* do you take ALA? 30 mins before you eat? 10 mins? As you're eating?

6) what are the longterm side-effects of ALA use?

7) when you say you feel "hyperglycemic" what exactly do you mean?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm curious about this and ALA in general and no one seems to be able to help me out.

MiniColemans, how are you measuring ketosis? By your saying that you're in "deep red" ketosis, I'm assuming you use ketostix? Don't assume that ketonuria (ketones in pee) equals ketonemia (ketones in blood), though if what you're doing is working for you, don't stop doing it...

XbdawggX, the best way of describing hyperglycemic is the proverbial "sugar high". You know the feeling when you've been on low carbs for awhile - almost manic energy. It's fun for about five minutes, then you wish your blood sugar was back around 65. :)

The long and short of what ALA does is increase insulin sensitivity by reducing plasma insulin, and upregulating the GLUT-4 receptors on muscle cells. Read the stickies for more info. If you're looking into buying some, get r-ALA - it's much stronger than the racemic mix of r-ALA and s-ALA, or what's commonly marketed as ALA, in other words.

I just noticed a typo, I meant HYPOglycemic :)

to answer you guys:

I take 75 grams of dextrose + 40-50grams of whey + 800mg of racemic ALA post workout.

then,, 75 grams of dextrose about 2 hours later + 700mg ala.

In addition to weightlifting, I'm a runner. After I run I eat 150grams of carbs and 30grams of protein in milk or pasta + 1gram of ALA.

I've done this since I got into ketosis. Monday night or tuesday is when I show ketones in urine (ketostix Ceebs checked every 3 hours). THEN, during the rest of the former CKD week, for 3 or 4 days, I do the ABOVE plan in addition to low carb meals in between.

basically, I'm thinking that once you get into ketosis, ala can keep you there with a carb level only limited by how much ala you want to take.

Now, i'm assuming that ketosis would be exited if you had like 1000grams of carbs a day or did'nt work out that much.

my pondering includes this as well: does the intake of carbs, if they dont kick you out of ketosis because of ALA, affect the CKD diet? In other words, is this as effective as regular ckd as long as one is in ketosis? :)

You can stay in ketosis, but that sounds like alotta total calories. Remember that you can't beat thermodynamics, even in ketosis.

what were the results of this experiment. I have found the same thing with ALA, I can't stay out of ketosis. I am 500 500mg Ala caps right now and want to know if it is as good as straight CKD because I have done that before and although it is not as hard it is more expense because of the meats and cheeses.

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID GIVES FALSE POSITIVE READINGS FOR KETOSIS

as long as he is loosing weight it wouldn't matter ;)
I see what you mean though.
As long as you feel the diet is workoing for you you should stick with it. I always cut with 300-400g carbs per day until I get down to about 6%, then I lower carbs to 100g per day and add more ALA. This has worked for me even up to a competition(not on gear). The problem I have is if I lower the carbs too much I do not get the energy for my work and for my workouts in the end of the week, but then again I know a lot is in the mind.
