Test drove a Maxda RX8 yesterday...HOLY SHIT!

A red 2003 model. We were at CarMax looking at some mudane-mobiles and I saw this little beast. I actually flushed.....like bumping into Brad Pitt naked or something. Dude prequalified my bf's credit to try to make sure we werent just busting his cojones and he let me drive it. I drove one block to US 41 and TROMPED that sweetie. I hit 7K in the first 4 gears.

God I'm still in a swoon. What a car.....

Ugh... I have 2 '95 Rx-7's. The last year they made them for the states.

Those were nice cars... wish they still made them. The rx-8s don't compare... not even close. I'd rather have a new Rx-7, but since mine are aging... I am selling them and getting a Lotus Elise in September...

How can you get any acceleration on RT. 41? There's traffic lights every 100 feet plus numerous seniors driving 30 with their right blinkers on.

you're better off with an S2000 than the RX8, even a 350Z

the RX-7 was one of the better cars done, just expensive to fix if you tweaked it

and I almost cry every time i see JH1 talking about the elise, that thing is sweet......rover 1.8 in your ear

Hun, I was the first EF'er to buy the RX8 and I can honestly say, it's the best damn thing (motorcycles excluded) I've bought in ten years.

I'm soooo glad they brought the rotary engine back!

i agree with sorearms totally

Except for the engine..BOOM.

350z and S2000 are much higher in price than the rx8.
Not sure why you throw them in the mix.

You'd be better off throwing in the MR2 and the celica in there.

Also drove a Gold 350z. That one was sweet too. How's the reliability on your RX8?

US 41....it runs from the great lakes all the way down to Miami. I live in Kennesaw Ga. It's a four lane.....traffic was navigable.

I own an S2000 and I LOVE IT. Never drove the RX8 but from all the specs I've read in magazines, the S2000 is better in alot of areas. I'm not just saying that because I own one.
The RX8 is a nice car though

Actually they are in the same class. The RX8 is priced around $27/28,000, THe S2000 is $33000, and the 350Z is around 33000 too.

Whichever car you descide to go with all 3 above are nice, but I would test drive all of them first.

I have only brought it to the dealer ti put a better sound system in it and 3 oil changes.

Runs like a top. There is no car in the 25-28k range that is even close to it.

The S2000 is 10k more as is the 350z.

the rx-8 ain't worth the money. dollar per dollar, you get WAY better value with other makes. Plus the back end if f'n ugly. And yeah, don't forget the inherent disadvantage of owning the first year model of any car. Way more bugs and repair bills to deal with, while the manuf. works out the kinks out of the car. Pretty much using you as the beta tester guinea pig.

That's all it cost new!? I think new car prices here (Atlanta) must be a little steeper than your part of the country.

How many miles have you put on it so far and in what period of time? And do you drive it "enthusiatically" or do you putter around?

(sorry about all the questions)

I drive it pretty hard.
MSRP on it 18 months ago when I bought it, was 28k + dealer add-ons like the front scoop and shit put her up to 30k even.

I bought mine in San Jose, CA.

It's been out two years with the rotary engine.

How much mileage in that time?

Brother man that's a sweet deal. Do you think Maxda is selling them so low because they were out of that market for a while and they're still trying to win back buyers? I mean the low price isnt due to a bad rep for reliability and/or performance, right?

I dunno what the deal on the price was, it was the first year they re-released the rotary engine, so that mighta been it.

Right now I have a wee over 7k miles.

I tried to test drive one but the dealers won't let you. You have to order one and the test drive is the drive you take when you buy the car.

Now that they're at used car dealerships I may try that anya....good looking out

WHAT THE FUCK?? Wont LET you test drive one?

Gotta quote my sister Betty White in the movie Lake Placid: "this is the part where, if I were a man, I'd tell [them] to suck my dick!"

Too bad they are both slow compaired to a real Muscle car, like say a MUSTANG!

Apples and Oranges guys.

Rustang- Straight line performance, low quality craftmanship.

S2000- Cornering beast, high quality craftmanship.

I used to live near the beginning of U.S. 41, Copper Harbor; any farther north is off limits with an RX-8, unless you wanna get stuck. :)

LOL@ your suspension.

Get a car that weighs less than a dump truck... then we'll get in to tweaking the suspsension.

The RX-8 GT is about the same price as the S2000. I test drived one and hell, that's one nice piece of ass. I just dont like the fact that it comes with a manual box only and no auto or sequential box. Other than that, the handling is fantastic.

You rx8 lovers and owners know that Mazda's claim HP number was overated right?

Visit any rx8 owners board for more info.

"Mazda has conceded, for a second time, that the stated horsepower of one of its models, the new RX-8 four-seat sportster, was overrated. The company had said the more powerful of the RX-8’s two engine choices would make 250 horsepower. That was adjusted to 247 horsepower before the car went on sale, and then, last August, Mazda lowered its numbers again, this time to 238 horsepower. The less powerful version of the motor, which is available with an automatic transmission, went from 207 horsepower to 197. The good news is that, to compensate for this momentary lapse, Mazda is offering RX-8 buyers a $500 debit card and free maintenance for the length of the car’s warranty. If you make a large enough stink, though, the company will buy back your RX-8—just as it did a few years ago when it was discovered that a Miata model made fewer horses than advertised."

Your welcome.

Eh, so how fast is it? I haven't really built anything in a few years, but I've never seen anything off the show room floor that really impressed me. Its so much cheaper to build a camaro or mustung up yourself, and its alot faster. This is only if you know what you are doing. It kind of sad when you see someone dump 10 grand in parts and work into a car that only right high 11's. Anywho I've built a 603 hp engine for only $6000 before (that included the price of the block, and ALL components of the engine), when I was 17.
