tapes or dvds

Does DVD quality go down with being used? I compared the quality of a new DVD and a year old DVD from the same series. The new DVD had considerably more clarity and better sound to boot.

How long are DVD's projected to last? Tape kind of falls apart over the years.

Overall.....DVD is far better so far.

DVD hands done. Better quality picture, more feature, no rewind/fast forward and lasts longer. One scratch and mess up a DVD big time but DVD still blow tapes away.

I rent DVD's and record them on Super-VHS using high grade standard VHS tapes.
Mitsubishi has this feature called SVHS-ET.
The tape recording has just as good a resolution as DVD
if you aren't on a High Definition set.
That way I get high quality copies for about $3 each + DVD rental fee.

Basically forever as long as they are not touched or scratched etc.
The only thing touching the disk is the brief contact as its loaded
and laser Light.

I would bet the quality diff you saw was either due to the player
or the TV or the Manufacturer of the original vs the New Disk..

I bought the Asian Invasion series... Something like 12 DVDs and they were not that good. Stay clear! Unless you are into Asians.

Vivid crap is all over and you can't tell the good from the junk.

Touching them jacks them up huh? How long does it take for the skin oils to do their damage?

I've heard that writing on CD's can ruin them as the ink can eventually go through the CD. I would think DVD's would be the same? Or is this just a story?

Who the hell would pick tapes over DVD's?

What a ridiculous question.

Its like asking "sex or getting kicked in the face with golf shoes"

Some people are into shoes...

Never heard of writing on the top being bad....
The CD or DVD disk is Metal, so writing on the top should not be able to go through it to the other side where the data is right?

The Metal disk is burned: (a laser burns tiny pits into the steel disk, either dots or dashes to signify a 0 or a 1 digitally) and then its covered with a clear liquid coating.
It's not the oils that damages the disk or coating, its cleaning the oil off incorrectly that scratched the clear coating, thus reducing quality or ruining the disk if the scratches are bad enough because the laser on your player can't read thru the scratched clear coating.

Do you prefer tapes or dvd's?I personally prefer dvd's.

after watching dvd's it is nearly impossible to go back to watching vcr tapes. picture and sound quality don't compara to dvd.
