Sweet Potatoes?

I just started eating them. Questions:

The ones I bought came in a "microwave ready" plastic package and I had to nuke them for 7 minutes each. Can I just buy reg sweet potatoes, put them in the microwave and nuke them the same way? That package didn't seem to be doing shit.

Do you eat the skin of the sweet potatoe? I haven't been.

What do you put on them, if anything? I used this 0 cal butter spray...it's probably got plastic or something in it but oh well.

One last Q, what's the difference between Yams and Sweet Potatoes? Are Yams more like regular potatoes?

Thanks, K for answers and stuff :)

I buy them without the wrap, cheaper that way--$.78 a lb, poke holes in them, run them under water and nuker for 4 minutes. I put either cinnamon or fake butter on them and they are great

I don't see any added benefit to a plastic package other than to charge you more.

I like to microwave them, cut in half, scoop out the inside & mix the inside with veggie broth, spices & chopped garlic then bake in the oven. Or just microwave & mix spices into the inside part.

Technically, yams & sweet potatoes are 2 completely different tubers. In most of the US, tho, the terms "yams" & "sweet potatoes" are used interchangeably.

When I have time, I cut them into wedges and bake them in the oven on 180 degrees celsius with some stevia/splenda and cinnamon... beautiful.

When I'm in a rush I poke holes into the skin and nuke them in the microwave. Not as good but it does the trick.

I like sweet potato "fries" too -- they don't get very crunchy, so they're a lil soft, but I still like them. It's best to get a baking sheet/jelly roll type pan (like a baking sheet with a lip) and a rack with this type of pattern: #

They usually sell them in a kitchen store in a set. Cut the sweet taters into strips, spray with cooking spray & bake @ about 400 degrees F till done.
