Hello all, I am a nearly broke college student, living in montreal.
I want to buy a suit in the near future, most likely this christmas.

Since I am somewhat young(21) I have 0 suits in my wardrobe.
Before buying a 250$ suit I want to know, some pointers on buying suits.
I know for sure that I want a black suit.

now 3 button 2 buttons? on the sleeves how many buttons? the collar thick, thin? I think I want something modern looking like slim( I think) is that cool?

I won't be buying brioni, kiton or anything like that, no gucci, no boss either.
I just want on stuff to look out and whats fashionable, I hear people saying how a this suit is better then the next and it looks nearly the same.

Hello,

Suits are hard to buy. But with a few pointers, you will do just fine. First of all, forget about labels: you can find great buys for less than $250 at vintage stores or H&M (they have a new collection designed by Karl Lagerfeld) or Zara. It may be worth visiting Target too - they have many pieces by designers now. I just don't know if those stores exist in Canada.

Your first suit should be versatile. I think that all men should have a navy pin stripped suit in their closet. That way you can wear the jacket separate from the pants. And they have a very modern look. I personally do not like a solid navy blue suit: they look like a military uniform. Go for pin stripped or black. There is some truth to the fact that the black suit is more versatile then pin stripped and more wearable in different occasions. But in my dictionary, nothing beats the pin stripped in elegance and sexiness.

The jacket should have 3 buttons. Not 2 (too old), not 4 (too much). And make sure that you only fasten the first 2 buttons.

Pay attention to the shoulders: they should be right and in place. The collar does not have to, but I like the thin looking ones, as they look more modern and informal. Have the place tailor your jacket in the waist - jackets should be tailored, not sagging. Good jackets are the ones that make your shoulders look broad and your waist look thin.

Sleeves: not too long. And if your suit comes with a label on the outside of the sleeve: RIP IT OFF OF IT! Labels are not made to be worn on the outside. The number of buttons on the sleeve depends on how formal your suit is: the more formal, the less buttons. Usually 3 buttons are OK, but they are the last detail that people pay attention to. Sleeves should not be too long or too short. That makes your suit looking dorky. Sleeves are right when they are right on your wrist line. You can make them a little shorter (just a little!), but not longer.

Pants: NO PLEATS! Flat front, non-complicated, elegant pants. Run from pleats, with all your might. No sagging pants either. Go for tailored but not tight pants. Hem your pants at the line between the back part of your feet and the beginning at the heel of your shoes.

And voila - you should be ready to go out on your on and buy a stylish suit that will make you look handsome, modern and, most of all, reliable. That is why you buy a suit after all!

damn that was a nice little essay

ok bro its simple i live in vegas and fasion is everything here...........go to armani or versace and spend around 1-2k and you wil look great , dont forget a nice pair of shoes also..........!!!!!!

keep it simple like he said, H&M, Zara, Express, Banana Republic... all have pretty cheap suits, the first three companies I listed have pretty modern fits as well. Almost every $$$$ suit I have has pleated pants and they are aweful.

Go with 2 button suit. It will not go out of style. Keep the pleatewd pant for more leg room. My quads are 31 inches atop and need the space
