Does it make a difference if its refined white sugar or brown sugar?

They are practically the same.

What really matters is whether your carb intake PWO exceeds your glycogen debt.

Dextrose may be superior to normal sugar (sucrose) but all studies on the point don't indicate any advantage between pure dex formulations and mixed formualtions (eg honey, 1/2 gluc, 1/2 fruct)

Personally, I would prefer some carb formulation that was nutritive.

Bananas, butternut squash, russett potatoes, are all high potassium, reasonably high GI (bananas medium) and nutritious. The latter has an awesome ORAC score too.
