Sugar alcohol?

Lately I've been seeing lots of supposed "sugar-free" products (e.g. protein cookies, sugar-free syrup) with varying amounts of "sugar alcohols" in them. What is this stuff? Here I've been thinking that I've been successfully avoiding extra sugar in my diet, but I've actually been inadvertantly injesting this stuff! How does it compare to the regular sugar you'd see on labels? How does it affect insulin release? Should I be trying to avoid it too? Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks.
 
The sugar alcohols tend to be one or more of the following: sorbitol, maltitol, or xylitol. They contain the same number of calories as normal carbs, but from most of the research, do not increase insulin levels.

They have one drawback, ingesting too much at one setting can cause the shits.
 
there is a great thread on the womens board saying to avoid all protein bars because glycerine DOES count as carbs even though the labels say not to count it!!!!
