WASHINGTON (AP) -- Health regulators are cracking down on Yellow Jackets, an herbal product promoted as an alternative to illegal street drugs.

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday it was stopping imports of Yellow Jackets, e-mailing the Dutch operator of an Internet site selling the pills that it is illegal to market dietary supplements as alternatives to cocaine and other street drugs.

Yellow Jackets contain the herb ephedra and other stimulants such as caffeinating kola nut extract.

The FDA's warning came a day before the parents of a teenager who took Yellow Jackets and died were scheduled to testify before a Senate hearing on the broader issue of how safe any ephedra-containing supplements are.

Ephedra is an herb that is legal to sell as a dietary supplement -- popular for weight loss and body building -- as long as that street-drug claim isn't made. But even legal ephedra is highly controversial, linked to dozens of deaths. Some critics have asked FDA to ban all ephedra, and the government has begun a criminal investigation of whether one U.S. manufacturer lied about the herb's safety.

The Yellow Jackets issue is separate, focusing not on ephedra safety but on illegal marketing.

"There does not appear to be any legitimate use for this product," the FDA said in a warning letter e-mailed to the Dutch operator of a Yellow Jackets Web site.

"Consumers should not purchase or use these or similar products available through the Internet or elsewhere," FDA Acting Commissioner Lester Crawford said.

Kids should not be taking it !

When ephedra based products are taken properly there are no side effects for most people.
You are always going to have some knuckle head with the
(MORE is better) attitude.
Energy supplements are some strong shit, & must be taken correctly.
This kind of stuff happens to 1 out of 100,00 people.
People don't read the warning labels-(no high blood pressure, heart problems, thyroid disorders, etc.)
I have seen people walk into a health food store & the clerk behind the counter tell them that they could die if they have one of these conditions, & the person say " Well i'll just try them."
This kid probably got it from his mom's stash.

My prayers do go out for this kids family.

Jesus, no one in the FDA has obviously ever tried training at 100% and doing cardio while on a carb restricted diet. Pfffff, no legitimate use...

I've been stocking up on ephedrine HCL for about a year, and every time I run out of a bottle, I order 3 more. I should be good for awhile :D

There’s a lot of confusion about this product. First, it’s sold as a ‘natural’ product. I’d say for the vast majority of people that means ‘safe’. I think for this reason people double and triple up on dosages. Moreover, I’ve seen little evidence on labels to inform user’s that more than one at a time is unhealthy or even potentially life threatening. Second, just how many ‘kids’ or even adults are going to ask their doctor to check them for high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, or nervous disorders before taking a ‘natural’ product? Hell, do you? I bet not. Third, and last, not everyone who had adverse effects to this substance double or tripled their intake. They popped one pill and dropped.
