I found this post which I thought was insightful
quote from Glenn pendlay
i think that in all sports, there are some individuals whose bodies respond in such a way as to give them characteristics that arent really needed in that sport.
for example, all top bodybuilders are ungodly big, but some are amazingly strong, and some arent.
all the top olympic weightlifters and top powerlifters are ungodly strong, but some are well built and some arent.
some of the strongest guys in weightlifting have fairly skinney legs. go figure.
all top cyclists can push the pedals hard, some get big legs from doing this, but a lot do not.
i can train two people on the same squat program, both will get stronger, but one will get a LOT of leg size increase, and the other will not.
basically if you are training for one specific characteristic,
you do the proper workout to achieve this.
however, it may be that your body will respond in such a way that you aquire other characteristics also, or it may not. this is just due to individual differences.
but this DOES not mean that just becasue some cyclists happen to get big legs from cycling, that cycling is the best way to get big legs... it isnt, its just that a few people respond to cycling this way.
and some people seem to get tremendous upper body development from snatching and clean and jerking...
but this doesnt mean that this is the best way to get a big upper body, it isnt
