Straps or Gloves?

Hi guys,

when doing shrugs and similar movements, my grip gives out before any other body part. The palms of my hands are indented with the barbell impressions! What should i buy to combat this - straps or gloves?

Hope y'all can help :)

Straps.....gloves are for pussies. You should train your grip, and you shouldn't become dependent on straps for all of your pulling, but the point of shrugs is to overload the upper back with enormous amounts of weight. It is a short-range pull and you should shrug much more than you deadlift. All that considered, you want your upper back to be the limiting factor, so I'd suggest straps.

Also, man, don't worry about your hands taking a beating. It'll make you tougher physically and mentally. You're gonna get a lot of comments on here, but I am glad I got here first.....gloves are for pussies, and that is the least offensive way I can say it. The only thing gayer than gloves are those pads some people place over the bar to squat with, lol.

Yeah really i dont want to use either one gloves are for pussies unlease u just want really nice hands i thought about it for a sec and said fuck it. And yes straps will not allow ur grip strength to get stronger as fast i suggest getting some grippers which im about to do as soon as i got the cash. U can also use chalk which will help alot.

all good suggestions- chalk is the way to go, it works incredible. especially for me since i have extremely sweaty hands (gross i know, sory)

i use straps when i get over 300# for shrugs

you have to use straps on your heavier sets..I can do at least 2-3 more reps if I'm using straps....They let you focus on your target muscle instead of just trying to hold onto the fking weight.

I'm happy to use straps on an exercise where the bar is meant to be bouncing around in my hand for high reps. Even then, though, I'll still go raw on shrugs while I can.

I guess if you wear panty-hose then you have to be careful not to get calluses otherwise throw the gloves away; they just make the bar thicker. Try to hold the bar closer to your fingers rather than in the middle of your palm. That should improve your grip and reduce callus formation.

Proud to use all of the above!! I enjoy my soft hands and so does my girl friend. Think about it in another point of view. How many people are using the same equipment you are, and how many of them are scratching, wiping, picking, rubbing thier hand on stuff you would rather not be toughing? I get real heavy on squats, and if I don't use the puss pad, i get these real nasty bruises on my shoulders that last for a week. I have my own pad. It's a lot thinner that what most have seen (about 1/4 of thickness), and uses velrco to attatch to the bar.

How i see it; Whatever it takes to get the job done, without having to cut the exercise short, and to use correct form.
