stock data

from various sites I can get stock data going back 10 years. for instance MSN allows me to download a csv file of some stock with the data for it over 10 years, in monthly increments.

is there any place that has longer time frames than that?
and then the funny part: anywhere that has it for free like the above?

I can write a script that will scan a list of all the stocks it knows on an index and then it will pull down the data from a site and then put the data into a database. that is easy.
the hard part is getting the places that have that data.

10 years is great data for a company that has been around 10 years, but it isn't as good for a company that is older than that.

I'm guessing that this data is gonna be $$$$

Try Moody's or S&P. They probably have a repository that you can probe? (Now that's subliminimaninal) :)

Anyway...try those two. They may have converted all of their historical data.

WHY? Is my question.

After 10 - 15 years the stock data is worthless. Most companies have to reinvent themselves every 15 - 20 years or die.

I'll give that a shot. one of my friends did analysis in college and I think he was having trouble finding data going back far enough - it was available for lots of $$ on cd at the time, but not free.

as for why ... :)
I have my reasons. you are looking at it from a different angle

Scrappy, my memory has turned into bat pudding on this one... but there is actually a free database that gives you all the info back to day zero of a company. I just can't remember the name. It comes out in booklet form through all the brokers once a year. Call any broker and ask them about a standard book that lists everything that comes out once a year... someone should know the name.

The trick would be to know someone on the exchange who has access to all of this information through their company... I knew someone like this... but don't any longer. :(

I'm moving out to Orange County... to practice law... no job out there, but I'm sure I'll stumble upon something. ;)

Yeah, there are some traiders in Chicago here who are 22-24 years old who pulled in 250 - 400K last year... and they are bitching about how they are taking a 50-60% pay cut... and only 100-125K... Poooooor babies.

he just sent me pics of the RT-10.

he also has two motorcycles - one cheesy one that he learned on (like his Miata), and the other is a D... ah shit, whatever those nice ones are that start with a D - spacing on the name
