Sticking it to the man!

SoreArms

New member
I recently got a promotion at work and moved departments

My office (cubicle) used to be in the back corner of a big room (the cubicles have permanent walls and are very big), with 6 other cubicles but only 2 other people in the entire room, so it was very private and quiet. I frequently came in late and no one noticed (supposed to be in at 8:00, frequently show up after 8:30), I could hide and post all day when I wanted to (and I wanted to often :D) and if anyone went to look for me or talk to me I heard the footsteps with enough time to minimize the browser window, maximize something else like a spread sheet, and pretend I was doing work. It was a beautiful set up.

So now my new desk is in a room with heavy traffic where Engineers and management are constantly in looking at enginenring documents, engineering drawings, etc... I am the lead of the department so they placed my desk in front of one of the doors where a lot of people walk through (like a hall way) and many use it as a short cut to get to the other side of the building. Also, one of the vice presidents office in right in front of me as well as one of the conference rooms where the managers have daily meetings at 8:15 AM. So that means that I have to make a much bigger effort to get here on time and always have to look productive.

For a minute I was a little bummed out, sure the promotion and extra money are good, but all this "real" work I have to do now is going to be a drag (do they think they pay me enough to actually work), plus it means less posting time on EF. Then I realized that they probably moved me here on purpose because they realized I was slacking off so much. Give me a little more money and make me comform like a sheep right? Well fuck that, I decided to stick it back to them! I have placed my desk and my monitor in such a manner that I am in sight of anyone that passes by, but they can't see my monitor unless you get behind the desk, there's a wall behind me. So I still post all day, I just sit up straight and put on a serious face as if I'm doing something. My boss even walked up a few minutes ago and stood in front of my desk talking to me, I continued posting as if I was doing work. Sure I might have to step it up a few notches, maybe raise my productivity from 30% to 45%, look like I'm giving 110% and I can still keep my self respect and build up my massive post count.

Hahahaha! Take that corporate fuckers!

I do the same thing, only my monitor can be seen by ANYONE who walks in the room as it is out in the open. That said, I hardly ever minimize LOL

i dont like your avatar

SA, you da man. I'm the same way, except my productivity is probably 20%.

Also I have a office mate who breaths too loud, he may end up dead.

someone came in to ask me something today right as the ball fell out of my mouse, i was reading a klu post and her avatar of her holding her tits was in clear view, i couldnt get rid of it since the mouse was messed up, it was classic

Windows key + D will minimize every window also. ALT+TAB is good too.

I like your attitude. Hopefully enough people will see how much you "work" and after a while you can get another promotion that includes your own office.
I, too refuse to join the sheep. I call them da masses(dumb-asses).

while i must commend you for finding a way to slack off, i must also say that i no longer wonder why so many jobs are being outsourced because the labor can be gotten cheaper elsewhere.

Jobs are being outsourced and employers clamp down those who remain because they are fkg GREEDY. I've worked a few different types of jobs in many different areas and most employers have one thing in common.
They expect you to sweat blood for "the team" but almost never reward all those who do. Anyone who stands up for themself is labeled a troublemaker(even if their productivity is thru the ROOF), and people endure pay cuts and infringements on their ability to live a normal life(mandatory OT, benefit cuts, etc.). Meanwhile, many of the same companies' execs get paid unbelievably obscene amounts and enjoy superstar perks. FK 'em. Anybody who cares to discuss, I got more. Believe me, I got more.

i don't doubt for one minute that it all has to do with making more money. only the best ass kissers really seem to go anywhere in life.

however, when you figure out that one of your employees is slacking off during work hours, even when the work is getting done, what better incentive than to cut hours/pay/outsource? i wouldn't want to pay someone to sit on their ass for 2/3 of the day if they can get their work done in 3 hours, unless their work is exceptional and they're way ahead of deadlines.

i have a strong work ethic that hinders me from slacking off no matter how much i try to. pisses me off when others around me are getting paid just as much as i am (or more) yet slacking off 3/4 of the time and not getting as much done.

I'm just going to say that I didn't start out like this, obviously I had to work hard to earn a good reputation in order to get promoted.

For over a year I had busted my ass, staying late (for no extra pay, I'm on salary), coming in on weekends, going way beyond the call of duty to get work done. At review time I got nothing more than a pat on the back and a small raise, to top it off my boss had then taken my long hours for granted and started giving me assignments after quitting time (I'm supposed to be off at 4:30, I'm usually here past 6:00, one of the reasons why I have no personal problem with coming in late), and when a project was finished ahead of time, my reward was another project with higher expectations.

So I eventually said "fuck it" and slowed things down to my pace, I do the amount of work that I feel they pay me for. Everything still gets done (eventually) and it gets done right, I'm just not going to jump through hoops to get things done anymore, like I once did. Funny thing is all of the recognition has come after my productivity adjustment. Go figure.

Why don't I just look for another job, you may ask? Well, I got this job right before I received my degree. It's great for someone paying dues (like me) because it allows me to put my foot in many aspects of engineering, where other companies might just have me doing one monotomous (sp) task and I had yet to be with any company for more than 1.5 years (I've now been here 2+ years) so this is my resume filler. With this promotion, I might now stay more than planned depending on how I like it.

is this why you're the founder of the EF unemployed (and proud of it) club?

Thats a Mexican stick it to the man right there.

What's up, crak.
I got big work ethic, too. And I know some people won't work no matter what. Identify and eliminate those individuals. Those who do work hard shouldn't be abused.
I've had the same experience as SoreArms, as well as several other situations(not being paid for additional(critical) work done, verbal agreements reneged on by management, promotions and bonuses which were promised but never materialized, & much, much more).
It's a question of which side violated the other's trust first. In a high majority of the cases I've witnessed, it was a company stepping on its own workers. A few guys may have been on a free ride at the time, but all were equally screwed.
If every company that was able to, outsourced or recruited abroad to save dollars, this country would have a huge problem because there's always somebody willing to do what you do for pennies.

Fuck the Man .

Fuck him.

Fuck Before He Fucks You.

Right?

thats How it Works in Republico land.

Right?

apparently you don't know the circumstances behind me not having a job.

2 herniated discs in my throacic spine caused me to lose my job even though i fought to stay. will i ever get surgery for them? probably not until i'm in my 40s or 50s. why? because they think i'm "too young" to have problems. yeah, that's right, i'm too young according to the doctors.

well apparently i wasn't "too young" to herniate the 2 discs at the age of 23 and have had to live with it for over 3 1/2 years now. apparently i was "too young" according to most doctors to experience any type of pain from these 2 discs that are herniated in completely opposite directions, yet the doctor told me i'm not supposed to lift anything over 25lbs "just in case."

was i happy to have to stop working? no, not at all. i was happy to be able to get back into school earlier than i was planning on though, and at least happy that once i am done school i won't have to resort to physical labor type jobs anymore and be able to forge some career for myself.

why didn't i get into school earlier? i decided to join the Marine Corps when i was 19. i quit going to school after one semester because i knew i wasn't ready and i wanted to try something else.

why am i not currently working? it's a matter of juggling schedules that's close to impossible at the moment because i have kids. it's easier this way, and i still have an income and am gaurenteed an income for the next 2 years.

don't make your assumptions about me without knowing the facts.

I don't really care that you're unemployed or the reason for it, just don't try to come off mightier than thou by talking all this work ethic crap when you've been publicly proud to be unemployed. Even going as far as making an "unemployed and proud of it" club. That's all I'm saying.

"what's a work?"

Da Mayor: Always do the right thing.

Mookie: That's it?

Da Mayor: That's it.

Mookie: I got it, I'm gone.

the "unemployed and proud" was a JOKE. the "what's a work?" is something i've said for years and that'll never change. "Work must be a place i go, cause it's not a thing i do" was a common running joke in my unit.

I never said i was "mightier than thou." i, however, keep hearing people say how they fuck off at work and keep seeing people posting on various boards how they fuck off at work. I've seen people do nothing but fuck off at work. Then i hear people bitching about outsourcing and jobs being cut and at the same time people are talking about how they fuck off at work.

don't you think some conclusion, besides greed from employers, can be drawn from that? i certainly do.
