Richmond police have released the name of a man found with a cache of weapons during a traffic stop there Monday night.
But exactly why Earl Leslie Heltsley, 35, of Richmond, was carting around nine pipe bombs, three automatic weapons and a box of ammunition is still a mystery, according to Sgt. Enos Johnson.
"It's still being looked into,'' Johnson said today. "We don't know anything yet.''
Based on a suspicious person report, Heltsley was stopped around 11:30 p.m. Monday at a doughnut shop near Visalia Avenue and 23rd Street, according to Johnson.
When officers tried talking to him, Heltsley reportedly fought with them and was subsequently arrested. It was upon his arrest that officers searched Heltsley's car and found the weapons, Johnson said.
In addition to the explosives, Heltsley was traveling with three fully automatic, World War Two-era "stem gun'' machine guns, Johnson said. One was reportedly assembled and operable, while the others were disassembled. The 9mm bullets found in the car would have fit those guns, according to police.
All the weapons are now in the possession of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to Johnson.
Heltsley remains in Contra Costa County Jail on suspicion of possessing explosive devices and fully automatic weapons, a violation of federal law.
